EVERYDAY PRICES IN LYON
Why the bakery math surprised us right away

One of the first things we noticed in Lyon wasn’t a landmark or a big cultural shift — it was the price of bread. A croissant at home is usually $4.50–$6. Here, it’s about €1.10. Baguettes are roughly €0.85 instead of around $3 in the U.S. When it’s something you buy often, the difference hits fast.

And because bakeries are everywhere, it’s almost impossible not to notice. We walk a block or two and have choices. No driving. No guessing. No “is this place worth it?” Breakfast, snacks, and quick treats suddenly feel simple.

Now that we’ve been here a week, we’re getting a better sense of what feels low-cost, what feels high, and what lands in the middle. It’s the kind of everyday detail you catch once you’re here for a bit. Bread and pastries fall firmly in the “easy win” category.

If everything in life were as straightforward as buying a baguette, we’d be thrilled.
