As we enter the quieter rhythm of the year, it feels natural to pause and reflect. These moments of contemplation so closely mirror the essential step in our design process when we take a good look at all the details before the final installation ( and we are deep in this phase for the next 2 weeks ). This need for purpose and an unhurried process is why SLOW DESIGN has been top-of-mind for me lately. |
It's a philosophy I live by, and at its heart, the practice focuses on creating with intention, prioritizing meaningfulness and sustainability to craft spaces that enrich our lives. |
While this may seem unconventional through an interior designer's lens, it’s truly how I like to approach creating spaces that feel intentional and deeply personal. Resist the rush to fill every corner and surface in your home with newly purchased art or decor. Once the essentials are in place, I invite you to leave spaces open, leave room for layering of meaning, stories, and moments that truly matter. |
Within my home, I translate this belief into reality by curating pieces that hold genuine personal meaning. For instance, I remember walking on the streets of Kiyomizu-dera in Kyoto, and entering a quaint little shop where I fell in love with delicate ceramic chopstick rests crafted to mimic folded paper cranes. Using Google Translate ( because gestures only go so far), I enjoyed a lively conversation with the store owner about them. Those cranes now live on my kitchen table, not simply as showpieces, but as objects that carry the essence of a delightful encounter with an artist thousands of miles away from home. They are pieces I truly love and use … though, full disclosure : I'm still mastering the fine art of actually using chopsticks ! |
Those origami-style chopstick rests, the Kilim tapestry from Greece, the illustrated volumes from Fredericksburg, the block-print table runner from India, and many other such unplanned & spontaneous discoveries, gathered at varied times ( years apart ), are woven into the fabric of my home. They are not just souvenirs or decor elements, but also quiet, gentle reminders of the people, places, and experiences that have shaped my story. |
So, as you reflect on your own space, I nudge you to embrace the principles of Slow Design : living thoughtfully, honoring imperfections, and allowing your home to evolve organically alongside you. Thank you for joining me on this journey toward mindful design. Here’s to homes that hold our stories, celebrate authentic moments, and embody lasting beauty. Warm wishes, |
