Turkey Day the pet safe way!

As we head into the holiday week, we want to share some tips to keep your pets safe and happy this Turkey Day and to give a huge thank you for all your support throughout the year. Your generosity makes our work possible, from stocking pet food pantries to providing veterinary care for local pets and their owners in need.

We’re also sharing a few heartwarming stories from pets we’ve helped this month, showing just how much your support makes a difference.

Gobble Up These Pet Safety Tips!
A few simple reminders can make a big difference, especially during the holiday rush. Here are a few tips to keep your pets safe this Turkey Day.

Safe Snacks For Pets
A small amount of cooked turkey without bones or skin is safe for most pets. Avoid cooked bones, fatty scraps, and seasoned stuffing, which can upset digestion or contain toxic ingredients like onions and garlic. Keep other holiday foods out of reach, including chocolate, grapes, raisins, foods with xylitol, and alcohol. Instead, offer safe alternatives like steamed vegetables or small pieces of plain protein.

Calm Corners
Holiday gatherings can be overwhelming. Provide a quiet spot where pets can relax if the activity or noise becomes too much. Secure doors to prevent pets from slipping out.

Decoration Danger Zones
Keep candles, ribbons, and small decorative items out of reach to avoid burns, choking, or other accidents.

Know The Signs
If your pet experiences vomiting, diarrhea, bloating, lethargy, or unusual behavior, contact your veterinarian immediately. Be sure to have the name and number of your closest urgent care and/or emergency vet clinic handy (all year long!).

ID & Tag Check
Holidays mean more doors opening and guests coming and going, which increases the chance of pets escaping. Make sure your pet’s ID tags and microchip information are up to date so they can be quickly returned home.

Trixie the Cat
Trixie’s owner thought she might have a UTI and was ready to rush her to urgent care. We suggested checking Vetco for same-day openings, a more affordable option with the same level of care. After diagnostics, it turned out Trixie didn’t have a UTI but an inflammatory stomach issue. She was sent home with medication and is now feeling much better.

Kika the Dog
Kika had an abdominal obstruction and surgery was necessary after all other options were exhausted. We contributed to the cost, and her owner was able to use insurance to cover the rest. The surgery was a success, and Kika is recovering well!

Penelope the Cat
Penelope was sadly attacked by a dog and suffered severe injuries. Her owner took her to Cape Cod Veterinary Specialists for emergency treatment. We were able to help cover a portion of the bill so she could receive the care she needed. Penelope is now home recovering, though she still does not have full use of her back legs. Her owner is doing physical therapy at home and checking in regularly with the vet. We hope she regains mobility soon!
