Notes From Italy…

Hi First name / Friends,

Last month, John and I carved out something we rarely allow ourselves: time. Three whole weeks wandering through Italy’s sun-drenched hills, tucked-away churches, and quiet medieval towns gave us the space to breathe, to look up, and to soak in centuries of artistry and craftsmanship. It was a trip that reminded us why we do what we do — and how important it is to stay curious, inspired, and connected to beauty everywhere.

From the frescoed chapels of Spello to the weathered stone walls of ancient villages, we found endless reminders that great design begins with intention. Every carved doorway, every worn tile underfoot, every play of light inside a 500-year-old sanctuary carried a story. As I walked through those spaces, I kept thinking of our RTD clients — past, present, and those we haven’t met yet — and how these moments of inspiration fuel the work we pour into each home. “Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer,” and this journey filled our creative well to the brim.

What matters most is what we bring back to you. This trip wasn’t just a vacation; it was research, reflection, and a recommitment to the level of thoughtfulness and detail RTD is known for. We want every client to feel the benefit of our curiosity — from the way we source, to the way we layer a room, to the way we solve design challenges with fresh perspective. “To see the world is to see with new eyes,” and those new eyes are already influencing the ideas we’re dreaming up for current and future projects.

We’re excited to share a few images from our travels — glimpses of ancient churches, centuries-old frescoes, and the rolling Umbrian countryside — but more importantly, we’re excited for what these experiences will help us create for you. Thank you for trusting us with your homes, your stories, and the beauty you want to build. There is so much more ahead.

Wishing you and your family a Blessed Thanksgiving Season,

The views just never get old here. The Cypress and Olive trees, as well as the vineyards that go on for miles and miles.…

A beautiful interplay of stone, plaster, and wood tells the story here—the carved stone font, the richly frescoed apse, and the warm wood-and-leather seating all working together in quiet harmony. It’s a perfect example of what makes Italian ecclesiastical architecture so compelling: layers of materiality, each with its own history, coexisting to create a space that feels both sacred and deeply human. For designers, it’s a reminder that textures and materials aren’t just elements—they’re storytellers.

One of the best parts of Italy is getting lost in these narrow, cool, stone walkways. This was in Spello, and one of the best parts is watching the light dance and move on the walls throughout the day…
