I can't tell you how many times I've gotten hooked on a show, only for it to be canceled with just one season under its belt.
Many, I think were ahead of their time and people just didn't appreciate them. And, others? Maybe they just didn't fit the mold or the spice that teens were viewing and wanting at the time.
These are shows I still think about often – Wondering what could have been, what would have happened with the characters and storylines and would there ever be potential to revive them in another capacity someday?
Chasing Life
02
"An ambitious young journalist, April Carver, has her seemingly perfect life—a budding career and new romance—upended when she's diagnosed with leukemia, forcing her to balance treatment and family with chasing her dreams and discovering who she truly is."
Now, this was another show that had heart and was something I could relate to, at the time, pursuing my dreams of journalism and feeling like life was just getting started. It was such a unique show for the timing and was probably ahead of its time, honestly. April was navigating this huge life news on top of just trying to be woman with a dream and falling in love.
Jane By Design
03
“A stylish high schooler, Jane Quimby, gets a dream internship at a major fashion house by pretending to be an adult, forcing her to juggle school, a secret fashion career, and complicated personal life, all while navigating the glamorous but demanding world of haute couture.”
Again, in a world full of Gossip Girl and Sex and the City, this was a more wholesome show about finding yourself, discovering your passion and path in life, but also letting yourself find love. It was also just very funny and deserved more time to find its footing. I couldn't get enough of it and bought it on DVD at a Big Lots or somewhere like that.
The Mysteries of Laura
04
“A brilliant but frazzled NYPD homicide detective, Laura Diamond, juggles solving complex murders in New York City with raising her two chaotic twin sons and navigating her complicated relationship with her soon-to-be-ex-husband (and fellow cop), who ironically becomes her boss, making every case a personal puzzle.”
This is Debra Messing in one of her BEST roles. This one, at least, had two seasons. It felt like a romcom meets Law and Order or White Collar. It wasn't gruesome with murder and the crimes, but focused around the relationships and personal lives outside of the office, which I so enjoyed, along with the workplace scenarios thrown in. Debra and Josh Lucas together was magic. Now, we're left with more questions than answers, and what could've beens.
Pretty Smart
05
“Abouta high-brow, intellectual East Coast novelist, Chelsea, who gets dumped and is forced to move in with her free-spirited West Coast sister and her eccentric roommates, leading her to soften her judgmental exterior and form an unlikely family with them.”
I think Emily Osment has such impeccable comedic timing. I've watched most of her shows (except for Georgie & Mandy's first marriage), including Young & Hungry and, of course, Hannah Montana. It was a little iffy at the beginning, but the perfect show to get into during the Christmas to New Year slump one year. It had the edge of Young & Hungry, and didn't take much thought. It was also just fun to put on in the background and have a good laugh. While maybe not the same heartwarming characters and plots as the others, it still had a chance to become more. But, now we'll never know.
So, there you have it. A mix of fun, comedy or dramedy shows that deserved better than audiences gave them.
What shows would you have included in the list?
What are you watching during the Christmas break, once the festivities and holiday cheer is over?
