Welcome to this season of deepening contraction in the northern hemisphere, where our individual journey of the soul is likely to encounter both the luminous and effulgent, along with the shadow and despair. With giving comes joy and with receiving come completion and humility. Salutations to the equinox!
It’s a time of self-care, selflessness, endings, beginnings, loss and rebirth.
How to maintain balance in all these comings and goings?
Each new day with Ayurveda is an opportunity for devotion, worship, purification, introspection, and illumination.
Each evening is a time for review, redress, restoring order and resolve.
How many cycles within cycles can you observe in an hour or a day?

To mindfully observe daily living, gently bring your attention to the nostrils, ask yourself:
where is the air brushing the walls?
right or left dominant?
warm or cool influence?
shallow or deep breathing?
audible or silent breathing?
focused or distractible attention?
agitated or settled?
After some breaths, allow the body and mind to relax and become quieter. By slowing the breath, the mind will slow, and one can observe its contents. Observation can lead to sattvic choices.
Mental health is cultivated by focusing on solutions. We know the ‘problem’ well. Once the problem is clearly defined, the solution appears behind the evidence, at the core of the ‘problem’. We have to look behind, and find the right guidance.
This is the concept of Prashna, or enquiry, from ancient times.
What is a recent example in your life of an ah-ha moment of realization?
Solving minor and serious problems with tracking breath awareness is a creative, effective and naturally inborn method of remaining buoyant throughout the seasonal ups and downs of family, job and personal health.
Grief Management During the Holy Days
From Ayurveda, we know that these cloudy, rainy, damp, cold days are governed by Kapha dosha, therefore these days can become seasonal triggers for unresolved grief, sadness, attachment and cravings are more.
Now is the time to gain more awareness and mastery over thesetamasictendencies, to rise up with determination.
To help keep the consciousness light and bright, during these darker days with fewer sunlight hours, there are many techniques, some of which are:
Meditation on the inner light– whether during daylight or nighttime hours, sitting quietly, doing nothing but being and observing the inner glow, can help re-set the neuro-transmitter system, for serotonin, melatonin and dopamine balance.
Choose light meals, especially for evenings– suitable fruits can be a good choice for mid-afternoons, when unconscious and subconscious emotions may show through our behaviours as thoughts, feelings and emotions.
Early to bed – winding down by 9pm, so sleep comes easily at 10pm, helps set you up for sound sleep before midnight, and for about six hours of restful sleep, supporting early rising, with plenty of time for morning practices, to feel eager, alert and enthusiastic for the day, season and future.
Seva or selfless service - is in focus at this time of year, with donation, gifting, fellowship and reaching out to help others. This to me is the spirit of unconditional universal love, unity of man and an ever-fresh canvas for goodness to express. How do you feel immediately after helping someone?
This last phase before the equinox is a time of transition from contraction to expansion. So, prepare for the turnaround by planning your empowerments for 2026. Write them on a calendar.
As life is a constant cycle of learning, observing, deciding and following through.

The emerging zero-point “reset” of pure potential, occurring for the first time in over 2,000 years
This is not about prediction. It’s about orientation, awareness, and conscious co-creation meeting the future with steadiness and intention.
Q. You’ve been invited to a home with unfamiliar food. What to do?
A. Discuss with the hostess at the time of the invitation, to offer to bring along a dish if s/he likes. Now is the time to describe your food preferences and plan for a harmonious and enriching experience together. Avoid awkward pauses! Support community through food sharing.
Q. What recipe would you suggest?
A. Here’s a great dish to bring to a group of people with unknown digestion:
Quinoa, Sesame, Coconut
Boil 1 cup quinoa in 2 cups of pure water.
Reduce the water to half, absorbing over about 15 minutes,
Separately toast 2 cups un-hulled white sesame seeds in a cast iron pan. Put aside.
Also separately, toast 2 cups of unsweetened, shredded coconut in the cast iron pan until golden brown. Set aside.
Mix all three ingredients in a large bowl and stir well.
Garnish with cilantro and finely chopped cashews. *Optional: Cashew Gravy
A great variety of appetite types enjoy this balancing combination and report good post-digestion.
Q. You’d like to invite a new friend home to share your vegetarian Christmas dinner, but you’re not sure how to help her feel comfortable for her first visit, what to do?
A. Enquire about her Ayurveda food program and create your recipes to balance the tri-dosha. Ask her advice about her favorite items and make a point of showing you had listened carefully.
Q. You have family expectations that bring undue pressures and trigger traumatic unresolved past events, at this time of year, what are the solutions from Ayurveda?
A. Food gifting is a way of healing ourselves and others, and making a point of deleting ingredients like worry, anxiety, fear, comparison, pride, revenge, etc., in favour of love, forgiveness, and healing. As you plan and prepare a dish to bring as an offering for others, try to be aware of mixing in goodwill and cheer, for a post-digestive effect of enjoyment and unity.
Email me, I’d love to hear of your offerings, recipes, anecdotes and best practices!
