Recognition for the Coventry BID Street Patrol team

Last week, two members of the Coventry BID Street Patrol team were formally recognised with an award for their outstanding actions during a testing and highly challenging incident in the city centre.
 
Security Manager, Stuart Grainger, wrote to Professional Security to commend officers Azeez and Dami for their exemplary conduct and courage while on duty.
 
During the incident, an individual carried out an unprovoked attack on an elderly couple before fleeing the scene and attempting to assault a group of teenagers. Acting on instructions from the Control Room, Azeez and Dami were immediately deployed to the location while police units were en route.
 
Upon arrival, both officers acted swiftly and decisively, successfully detaining the individual and preventing any further harm to members of the public. While awaiting police support, they were subjected to a significant amount of racist verbal abuse from the individual involved.
 
 Despite this unacceptable and hostile behaviour, Azeez and Dami remained calm, professional, and fully focused on public safety.
 
Their response demonstrated exceptional courage, restraint, and professionalism, reflecting the very highest standards expected of Professional Security. Both officers consistently go above and beyond in their roles supporting Coventry BID, and this incident further highlights their dedication, integrity, and value to the team.
 
Coventry BID is proud to recognise Azeez and Dami for their actions and thanks them for their continued commitment to keeping Coventry safe.

coventry university new drone study
Coventry University has launched a new study examining whether the use of drone technology can be scaled up to make cities better prepared for emergencies.
 
The URBAN ASCENT project which also involves Coventry City Council, Skyfarer, The Manufacturing Technology Centre and Slink-Tech, will look into whether drones could be used to deliver critical medical supplies, create maps of city structures, speed up disaster response, support search and rescue missions and provide communication in remote areas. 
 
Funded by a government grant, supporting work that will help develop next-generation aviation technologies, it is hoped URBAN ASCENT will help establish Coventry and the UK as a hub for urban aerial logistics and sustainable aviation.

Student Walk Working Group

Time: 11 am -12 pm
Location: Coventry BID Office
 
We’re setting up a long-term working group to support student engagement with city-centre and night-time economy venues across all university intakes throughout the year, starting with the Student Walk on the 28th January.
 
Purpose of the working group
 
Plan and support student walks and engagement activities across the year
Confirm participating venues and levels of involvement for each activity
Agree on routes, timings, and what each venue will offer
Coordinate promotion, offers, and student communications
 
Attendance is welcomed from venues who:
 
Would like to host a short showcase during the walk, or
Are interested in supporting through vouchers or offers for students
 
 
Student Walk – Event Information
Date: Wednesday, 28th January
Time: 2–4 pm

Audience: University students (including January intake and returning students)
The Student Discovery Walk will guide groups of students through Coventry city centre, stopping at selected venues to introduce them to the local night-time and leisure offer.
 
How the walk will work
 
The walk will run between 2–4 pm
Students will visit 4 hosting venues
Each stop will last approximately 30 minutes
Venues can showcase their space, activities, atmosphere, and upcoming offers
 
Ways venues can get involved
 
1. Host venue (pit stop)
 
30-minute showcase during the walk
Opportunity to engage directly with students
Optional vouchers or offers to encourage return visits
 
2. Supporting venue (goodie bag contributor)
 
Provide vouchers, QR codes, or promotional offers
No attendance required on the day
Included in student goodie bags and event promotion
 
The aim is to build familiarity, encourage repeat visits, and support student engagement with Coventry’s venues beyond the walk itself.
