Oaklea Mansion's Origin Story

“Winnsboro has always been part of my story, even when I didn’t realize it would become my home. My family roots run deep here. We still operate a hay farm just outside of town that has been in our family for generations — originally run by my great-great-grandfather and carried on through the years. While those roots were firmly planted in Winnsboro, my path took a slight detour. My dad — the self-proclaimed black sheep of the family — ended up in Lubbock, where he met my mom, and later took a job in Longview. That’s where I was raised. Even so, Winnsboro was never far away. I spent countless weekends here — Christmases, Thanksgivings, holidays, summers  you name it. When we officially restarted the family farm in 2013, I found myself driving back and forth every weekend. Still, I truly believed Longview would be where I settled. I moved back, bought a house, and thought I had it all figured out.”

"Then I met Norma."

To Be Continued………

The Meeting of Norma
"Norma was the longtime owner of Oaklea Mansion, which she lovingly ran as a bed and breakfast from 1997 to 2013. In 2019, we met, and she shared that it was time for her to sell the house. She was tired, ready to pass it on — and honestly, I was heartbroken. I had just discovered my connection to the house, which I had seen so many times as I would drive down Main St and just gotten to know her.

What really stopped me in my tracks was a memory that suddenly made sense.

My great-grandmother used to say she wanted to celebrate her 100th birthday in “the big white house.” We didn’t own a big white house, so growing up, I never knew what she meant. It turns out, she was talking about Oaklea Mansion. She never made it to 100, but that story stayed with me — and in that moment, it felt like the house was calling me back."

What's Meant to be will Always Find a Way!

"I went home and started asking myself impossible questions. Could I make this work? Could I get a loan? Could I actually do this? When I finally asked Norma if she’d consider me as a buyer, she gave me a price that sent me running. I thought there was absolutely no way.
And yet, I kept coming back.

Maybe it was the pull of the house. Maybe it was the stories. Norma is my granddad’s first cousin, and hearing history from her perspective — about the family, the land, the house I knew growing up on our family land — was something special.

Her former home sat right next to where our hay farm now operates, so the stories felt layered and connected. Oaklea is a historic home, and once you spend time there, you realize the stories live in every wall, every nook, every creak of the floor.

Over time, the conversation shifted. The numbers changed. Slowly, impossibly, it became something I could figure out.

In October of 2021 — after months of uncertainty, delays, and navigating COVID —

I bought Oaklea Mansion!"

Community Like No Other
"From day one, this town showed up. Friends, neighbors, people I hadn’t even asked — they just came. Winnsboro has a way of doing that. When you need help, people appear. That spirit is something I feel draws people here and keeps them here.

It’s the same spirit I see every Christmas when we pull together the Holiday House Tours.

That’s not something I could ever do alone. People come out of the woodwork to decorate, volunteer, share stories, and help bring the house to life. Being able to give Oaklea back to the town — to share its history, beauty, and sense of connection — is what it’s all about."

What It's All About

"Oaklea Mansion isn’t just a bed and breakfast. It’s about Winnsboro. It’s about history, community, and creating a place where people can gather, stay, and slow down.

It’s about giving back to those who came before me and to the people who continue to show up now.

The house — like life — has had its ups and downs.

But watching it grow year by year has been incredible.

As of January, Oaklea has been in operation under my care for four years, and the difference between year one and year four is night and day. We didn’t start with house tours or historical tours — I knew I wanted to share the house, but I didn’t yet know how.

It’s been a process of baby steps, trial and error, and listening to what the house — and the town — needed."
At Oaklea Mansion Rest, Connect, & Step Back into a slower rhythm
So What is Oaklea Mansion?
"Today, Oaklea is intentionally a TRUE bed and breakfast, not an Airbnb.

Guests share the space, meet one another, and experience something communal — the way it would have been in 1903.

Some rooms don’t have TVs, because they wouldn’t have back then. The sheets are chosen to be unbelievably comfortable. Breakfast is home-cooked, as local as possible, often sourced from the farmers market.

It’s about rest, connection, and stepping back into a slower rhythm.

Yes, my prices may be higher — but I believe you get more. And the greatest compliment I hear is when guests try somewhere else and come back saying..."

“Nope. We’re staying at Oaklea.”

Some May Ask

So why Winnsboro?

And Casie's reply would be – "Because it’s always been home — even before I knew it would be.
Because this town showed up for me.
And because Oaklea Mansion deserves to be loved, shared, and rooted right where it belongs."

Future Highlights & Events

  • Historical Home Tours will begin again once the weather permits
  • The Model A Station Wagon "Woodie" is a bit cool at the moment with no AC or heat, but once the temperatures permit we have new things coming for the tours and can't wait to share that with the town.
  •  Historical Clothing Walk (Victorian and Edwardian Clothing) through the Mansion will be on January 12-16.
  • Valentine's Day (February 14th) meal by Chef Tyler of Fusion in the Woods. Chef Tyler will cater a gourmet meal fit for a king and queen, reservations should come out shortly for this.
  • Follow Oaklea's facebook page as we have MANY new things for this coming year set to roll out that I can't talk about yet, but will be on the list soon.
