You may be surprised to learn that I am not a New Years resolution kinda girl. I gave up that game a long time ago. I don't wait for the calendar year to flip to implement change and honestly hitting the ground running on the first of January is rarely successful.
I'm more of a, pump the brakes, ruminate on how I want to proceed, and then create a course of action.
I like a plan :)
That being said, the plan has to be malleable. We can't expect our execution to be perfect on the first try. Life isn't simple, there generally isn't one right way; and oftentimes we need to explore more than one path to obtain the results we desire.
One of the most beautiful tenets of mindfulness meditation is the idea that you can always begin again.
Getting “stuck” or "lost" is not only part of life - it's expected. That's why mindfulness practices, like yoga and meditation are so life changing for people who pick up the practice.
It's not because their body changes (although it might) - it's because their mindset changes. Rather than viewing each derailment as disaster - we can see it as an opportunity for growth.
This isn't an easy shift, and it doesn't mean we can't be disappointed when things don't go as planned. But to me, this approach feels a whole lot more hopeful and productive than beating yourself up about mistakes made.
Turning your attention inward tunes you into your most honest desires and it gives you the power to choose your course because you start to see more clearly.
You become less reactive to the friction in your life and more thoughtful in your response to those around you.
If you're interested in dipping your toes into some of these practices there are lots of ways to get started!
