Rum Pum Pum by David Harrison and Jane Yolen |
A lonely tiger finds a new friend (a drum) and goes along and goes along and goes along the road, finding even more friends who join him. |
Early Literacy Tip This is a great read-along, with lots of sounds to make and plenty of word and phrase repetition that will encourage your child to tell the story with you. Have your child identify (or make up) what types of drum sounds might indicate each animal in the Boy’s story. |

Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Car by Kate Dopirak |
A little red car leaves its garage at bedtime to zip and zoom past various fellow vehicles at night. Tractors and diggers, planes and fire trucks, all get a beep-beep goodnight. Finally tired, the little car takes a ferry back home, ready to let the “beep-beep dreams begin.” |
Early Literacy Tip Have your child point to and identify the different vehicles that the little car meets - what do they do and where might they be going? Having your child repeat the sounds each vehicle makes is a good way to practice speech and sounds, plus it’s fun! |

A Quick Trip to the Store by Sam Wederlich |
When they run out of bananas (oh, no), a girl and her mom must make a trip to the store (oh, NO!). Will it be as terrible a trip as they both think it will be? |
Early Literacy Tip A trip to the grocery store is a wealth of early-literacy opportunities. Have your child help make (and write, if able) the shopping list. At the store, a modified game of I Spy is a good way to have your kids help find the items you’re shopping for: “We need something that starts with B” or “We need something that is yellow.” For the littlest littles, talking about what you see (I call it “narrating life”) is a vital step in their language development: “Look at the yellow bananas! We can put them in our cart.” |

Good Morning, Snowplow! by Devorah Bruss |
When the snow begins to fall at night, the town and farms sleep. But the snowplow driver and his dog have a busy night, doing the important work of clearing the roads. |
Early Literacy Tip Using crayons to draw and color snowflakes, and scissors to cut them out (if able) is excellent for fine-motor development, a vital skill for learning to write. (And, you know and I know that snowflakes often have six points, but we won’t get picky about how many sides your child's snowflakes have. Or if they even have sides – round is good, too!) |

National Bubble Bath Day! (January 8th) |
A Whale in the Bathtub by Kylie Westaway |
A not-especially-nice whale ("You could have knocked!") has invaded Bruno’s bathtub and won’t get out even though Bruno needs to take a bath. Bruno tries to explain the situation to his family, but no one believes him. "You're always making things up." "A whale can't fit in the bathtub." "It's just impossible." Will Bruno finally get a chance to bathe before he gets in trouble with Mom and Dad? |
Early Literacy Tip Washing toys is a great sensory-play option for your child. Simply fill a large bowl or plastic tub with an inch or so of water and bubbles, add a washcloth and a towel (to catch any sloshes), and your child will be hard at work getting their hard plastic toys squeaky-clean. Manipulating the washcloth around the toys’ nooks and crannies is excellent for developing fine-motor skills, and “first we wash, then we rinse, then we dry” reinforces sequencing skills. |

Soup-er Bowl! (Fridays in January, 11am-2pm) |
Is That Wise, Pig? by Jan Thomas |
Mouse is making yummy soup and Cow and Pig are helping add ingredients. But when Pig brings some unusual ingredients: “Is that wise, Pig?” |
Early Literacy Tip While reading, have your child point to the pictures as you count the ingredients together. Then, soup for supper! If you have a simple soup recipe, cooking together is an excellent early-literacy exercise: reading instructions; following steps in order; measuring ingredients; and observing the changes that happen when things cook. Want to share your soup? Drop off a crockpot of your delicious family meal to share with your neighbors. Soup-er Bowl is a great time to share the importance of community with the little ones! |
