A Note from Julie, the Greenhouse Curator:

Remember back in Issue 107 when I shared a photo of my parallel peperomia and told you about one stubbornly tall stem that took forever to leaf out? At the time, the plant seemed to be pouring more energy into the stem than the leaves.

Here’s an exciting update:

That long-awaited stem now has five leaves at the end of it. Every other stem on this plant has three or four leaves. This stem wasn’t lagging behind. It was preparing to support more.

I’ve been thinking about that as I plan some big things for The Proofreader Greenhouse in 2026: launching TPG Goods, moving The Trellis community to a brand-new platform, and creating a digital resource I’ve wanted for a long time. All of them need a strong foundation to stand on.

The same is true for you. If you’re hoping to take on more this year (more clients, new offerings, or better systems), the work that supports that growth might take longer than you’d like.

If 2026 feels full of possibility and pressure, maybe the question isn’t how fast you can move, but whether the stem you’re building is strong enough to hold what’s coming. That stem might look different for each of us, but it’s often built through things like sustainable schedules, solid systems, and community support.

What kind of "stem" are you strengthening right now? Reply and let me know. 🪴

Each week in The Leaflet, I feature a proofreader or editor so we can learn from each other and get to know the people behind the work.

I’d love to feature some new faces in 2026. If you haven’t been featured yet and would like to be, please apply. And if you’re part of a proofreading or editing community, feel free to share this there or pass it along to someone who might enjoy being featured.

Favorite LinkedIn Posts This Week:

Here are three posts I enjoyed reading on LinkedIn recently. Click the links below to read them.
  • Lurkers today, clients tomorrow: Anjeanette reminds us that just because someone isn't liking or commenting on our online content doesn’t mean they’re not paying attention. Keep showing up. Sometimes the biggest opportunities come from the quietest followers. 👀️

  • The secret to realistic project timelines: Jeanette walks through her process for quoting timelines for editing projects. It shows how much care she puts into accuracy, quality, and energy. ⌛

  • Track what you've accomplished: Josh shares a story about David Letterman stacking cups to mark each completed show. It’s a good reminder to focus on what we've finished, not just what's still on the list, so we can actually see our progress. 🧮

Catch of the Week:

The term “pH” refers to a measure of how acidic or alkaline something is. The “H” is uppercase because it refers to hydrogen, which is always capitalized as a chemical symbol.

Catch of the Week screenshots come from my transcript proofreading. I can't change what a person said, but I can make sure words are spelled correctly and punctuation marks are in the right spots. If you're interested in learning more about transcript proofreading, I wrote an article about it here.

Plant Photo of the Week:

I’ve tried (and failed miserably) to keep maidenhair ferns alive. This beautiful one I saw at a local conservatory is a good reminder that some plants need conditions I can’t give them at home. Maidenhair ferns like steady warmth and lots of humidity, and my house just isn’t built for that. So I admire these plants where they grow best and let that be enough.

Let's keep growing together!
Julie
