“For freedom, Christ set us free. Stand firm, then, and don’t submit again to a yoke of slavery.”

Galatians 5:1

Dear First name / friend,

When Adeline was a baby, I received a form of deliverance prayer from my local church. At the time, I didn’t know what it was; a trusted Bible study leader and my pastor’s wife simply prayed over me in my home. It was a transformative moment in my walk with God, a time where I recognized a deep lie I believed about myself. I look back on it as a turning point.

It wasn’t until many years later I learned what “deliverance prayer” was—and the many opinions about it. As I took time to study it, I quickly realized that the healthy, biblical deliverance prayer I received was not the norm.

One of the top questions I received when we asked for your input on the new Verity Podcast prayer series was, “Is Deliverance Prayer Biblical?” To address this question I had to go beyond my experience to the Word of God itself. I also watched videos from famous “deliverance ministers” and read through how-to’s of deliverance prayer. This week’s episode is all about it—so stay tuned Thursday for the drop!

One thing I took away from my study for this episode was this: healthy deliverance prayer does exist, can be biblical, and does result in true freedom. But it also has very clear characteristics that are not found in many deliverance ministries today. Here are some of the markers of healthy deliverance prayer:

Join me on Thursday as I walk through what unhealthy deliverance prayer looks like, the basis for deliverance in Scripture, and more.

at home with
Phylicia
Since I’m moving content off social media, we’re bringing it here! Here are a few things I’m loving at home lately:
  • Our fir needle & pine candle: Josh jokes that I’ll stain the ceilings with how often I have candles burning, but thankfully ours are completely nontoxic!
  • I found Thankful Homemaking on Instagram and have fallen in love with her snack recipes. I haven’t bought her cookbook yet, but I plan to!
  • Now that I’m almost five months postpartum, I can honestly say the Willow hands-free pumps have been a lifesaver for me. Not only have I made it longer than ever breastfeeding (normally my supply ends by four months) but this has enabled me to pump while walking and working around the house. They are an investment, so definitely a registry item if this is your first baby; but if you’re a working mama (or even if not), this is something I wish I’d had every time. (You can also find them on eBay secondhand!)

what I am
reading
Giants in the Earth
This 1920s story of Norwegian-American settlers is like a grown-up Laura Ingalls Wilder. The themes are more mature (as in, written from an adult perspective but no sexual content), and I deeply resonate with how the author depicts the interior world of the primary couple. I’ve been drawn into the dynamics of living in community on the plains and how so many of our relationships as humans don’t change over the centuries.

The Works of Arminius
This is a massive three-part series, and so far I’ve only finished the introduction, which is a transcript of the funeral speech for James Arminius at his death. Deeply impactful.

Domestic Monastery
Just finished this little (Catholic) book on the theology of home. It’s quite short and full of good reminders for how to view our homes as a place of worship.
