i can't stop saying “yes”.

Why is saying “no” so hard?
People with ADHD find it hard to say “no” because ADHD changes how the brain handles attention, emotion and motivation.

How does it show up

Novelty/Dopamine
Saying “yes” feels really good.

Guilt wins over logic

Even when we know we should say “no”, refusing can feel more uncomfortable than being overwhelmed.

People Pleasing
Saying “yes” feels safer than saying “no”.

Emotional Intensity

Feeling the emotional pain of letting someone down.

Time Blindness
Can't accurately predict your future time capacity.

Impulsivity

Response happens before we have time to evaluate.

What Helps?
Have a delay script:  This gives you time.  Leave no wiggle room. Keep answers short and simple.

“Thank you for asking.  I just don't have any room in my schedule.”

“My plate is full but thank you for thinking of me.”

Set your own rules:  Decide ahead of time what is an automatic pass.

Written replies:  Text or email may be easier that an in-person response.

Reframing:  Whose feelings are really getting hurt when you overcommit or get overwhelmed?
You?  Your family or pets?

Let's get rid of the overwhelm and find your work/life balance.
