February is a month of connection at the Kansas Forest Service, connection to trees, to one another, and to the work happening across Kansas to keep our landscapes healthy and resilient. In this issue, we’re celebrating some of the people, programs, and stories that bring those connections to life.
This month’s featured tree is a true standout: Kansas’s State Champion Southwestern White Pine, located at the Lee Richardson Zoo. You’ll also hear more about the Kansas Champion Tree Program on the latest episode of the Kansas Canopy Podcast, where we talk with Brady Wolken about how these remarkable trees are discovered, measured, and protected, and the surprising stories behind them.
February also marks Kansas Wildfire Awareness Week, a statewide effort to remind us that wildfire preparedness is a shared responsibility. From homeowners and neighbors to local fire departments and agency partners, working together truly does make Kansas stronger. Alongside that message, February is packed with trainings, workshops, and community events across the state, offering plenty of opportunities to learn, get involved, and connect.
Whether you’re here for giant trees, wildfire readiness, lifelong learning, or all of the above, we’re glad you’re part of our community!
Enjoy!
