Epiphany
tide
Dear friend,
We find ourselves in a threshold moment in the year. February 2nd marks Candlemas, the ancient feast of the Presentation of Christ, when the elderly Simeon took the infant Jesus in his arms and proclaimed him "a light for revelation to the nations." We stand midway between Epiphany and Ash Wednesday, and something in both nature and spirit begins to stir.

“Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace,
according to your word;
for my eyes have seen your salvation
that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples,
a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and for glory to your people Israel.”  Luke 2:29-32
"Lighten the darkness Lord."

This month

“If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him." John 14:23

February holds a sacred invitation: to notice light returning. And to not be afraid of the dark. The feast of Candlemas on the 2nd completes the traditional Christmas cycle and turns our faces gently toward Lent. In nature, the first subtle stirrings begin beneath the frozen ground.

This month we practice: watching for light in the world around you us, simplifying our spaces, and preparing our hearts for the Lenten journey ahead. Enjoy the practical tips in the post above, to mirror ancient rhythms of the church in your daily life. They are a great way to help children (and us!) remember that faith is about our whole person: body, mind and spirit! And that faith is also about being home.

Activity this week
As daylight fades each evening this month, try this simple household practice:

Gather your family or sit quietly on your own. Light a candle (or a candle for each person). Pray: "Lord, as this candle burns, may the light of Christ shine through me. Amen."

Sit in the candlelight for a few moments before turning on electric lights. Let your eyes adjust. Notice how differently you see when illuminated by flame rather than electricity. Ask those with you to share: "What is God speaking quietly to you today?" Teach the children to hear His voice when they are young!

This small ritual takes less than five minutes but marks the transition from day to evening with intention. Children especially love being part of lighting the candles. Over time, in the winter months with short days this can become a rhythm your household will treasure.
