Dear Sunday Sparker,
I've had a very caffeinated couple of weeks. Today I delivered a major presentation that I usually complete in mid-February and present in late February.
I offered myself all kinds of treats to stay put during my focus blocks and finish the analysis and slides. I made it fun.
This is how I made the hard task fun:
- I ordered a latte in the afternoon after I finished my homemade coffee to power through my work a few times.
- I once ordered the 12-person coffee box because I wanted to sip hot coffee while I worked for as long as possible. I shared it with others, but still, that amount of coffee did the trick, resetting my abnormal coffee cravings to normal.
- I put aside white chocolate dragée and had one piece as a reward whenever I finished 3 slides.
- When the analysis part got lighter, I listened to all the 2-hour podcast interviews with James Clear that were recently released.
- I caught up on one of my favorite podcasts: The Long and the Short of it.
- I tried to go outside once a day for a quick stroll in between focus blocks to get some sun and call my 18-month old boy.
As you can see, for me, making work tasks fun requires a lot of caffeine, some sugar, and audio companionship. That’s how I get my motivation up.
What about you?
How do you motivate yourself to do hard tasks?
How do you make them a little sweeter?
I’d love to hear your ideas. Just hit reply.
