Hello First name / friend,

September has a funny way of arriving rapidly. Flights fill, smaller hotels disappear, and the destinations that feel good in late summer tend to reward the people who plan earlier than they think they need to.

September is becoming peak season in many places. Weather improves, crowds thin, and travel loses some of the overwhelm in place of greater sense of ease. So today, I want to help you think a step ahead for late summer 2026 and avoid planning when the best options are already gone.

If you’re thinking, “It’s too early to think about September,” I agree as a fellow human. From a planning standpoint, this is when the best trips start coming together. A few reasons why:

September rewards preparation.
Smaller hotels, well-located rooms, and guides who make the experience book far in advance for this month. It’s one of the most comfortable times to travel, but only if you’ve secured the right places to land and experiences to have.

It’s easier to pace the spend.
Booking earlier gives you flexibility with flights and hotels and time to spread costs. When we book refundable hotel rates early, we also monitor price drops and rebook if something better opens up.

A calmer summer.
Knowing plans are in place months ahead makes the rest of your summer far more enjoyable. It's like Sunday afternoon knowing you finished all the errands and house work for the weekend.

Below are four September destinations I’m working through with clients who want substance, beauty, and ease without heavy crowds.

September is late winter edging toward spring. The South Island still feels expansive, but days are longer and the light begins to soften. New Zealand works well for active families, wine lovers, travelers drawn to big Antarctic-style landscapes, and people who want a strong local culture alongside nature.

Why go in September
  • Road trips through Central Otago, Glenorchy, and toward Fiordland with very little traffic
  • Helicopter flights over glaciers, alpine lakes, and fjords that are still dusted with snow
  • Lakeside walks and lower-elevation hikes as conditions open up
  • Wine tasting in Central Otago when vineyards are focused and unhurried
  • Long evenings by the fire after full days outside
Where I’d stay: Blanket Bay. Secluded, dramatic, and designed for people who care more about landscape than nightlife.

September is when the coast starts to settle. Summer energy fades, temperatures cool, and towns return to their natural rhythm as early fall begins to show. This works especially well for families with young kids or anyone who wants charm, comfort, and nature without crossing an ocean.

Why go in September
  • Lake swimming, kayaking, and boating without August crowds
  • Easy hikes and bike rides with cooler mornings
  • Farmers markets, roadside stands, and restaurants filled with locals
  • Early starts, early nights, and days that don’t require reservations
Where I’d stay: White Barn Inn A Maine classic done with warmth, polish, and stellar eats.

September remains one of the strongest months for safari and an ideal time to combine wildlife, Cape Town, and the Winelands. This is a great fit for multi-generational trips, honeymoons and anniversaries, or milestone birthdays where the experience needs to match the occasion.

Why go in September
  • Morning and evening game drives with excellent wildlife concentration
  • Guided bush walks that focus on tracking, ecology, and landscape
  • Cape Town days spent between neighborhoods, coastline, and food culture without summer heat
  • Time in the Winelands walking gardens, cycling vineyard roads, and lingering over long lunches
Where I’d stay
For safari, Singita properties for consistency, conservation leadership, and design.
In the Winelands, Babylonstoren for gardens, food, and space.
In Cape Town, Belmond Mount Nelson for a central base with history and calm.

September is when Forte dei Marmi hits its stride. The water stays warm, beach clubs remain active, and crowds thin to families and Italians who return year after year. It’s social, stylish, and relaxed, with depth beneath the surface. Marble from the Apuan Alps was shipped from this coast across the world. Michelangelo’s David came from these mountains. It works for couples, families, groups of friends, and travelers who know Italy well but somehow missed this coast.

Why go in September
  • Beach clubs with full service, long lunches, and afternoon swims
  • Morning bike rides to the market and along the promenade
  • Easy trips into the mountains for cooler air and views
  • Aperitivo in town followed by late dinners that stretch
Where I’d stay: Pensione America For couples and friend groups. Beautiful, social, and sun-washed. Villa Roma Imperiale Established and elegant with large rooms, gardens, and a loyal family clientele.

If you’re thinking ahead for September 2026, this is the window when choice is still wide open.

P.S. Which destination stood out as the best fit for your late summer plans? Hit reply and tell me.

Not traveling in September? Feel free to pass this along to someone who is.
