The Solidarity Scoop 📰
Monthly updates from the border + beyond
This month reminded us why steady systems matter.

Escalating violence across several regions of Mexico led our local teams to pause site visits to ensure their safety. We’re grateful our staff is safe and that regular programming has resumed.

But moments like this are not interruptions to our mission. They are the reason it exists.

Here’s what that looked like this month.

🇲🇽 Mexico
Prevention & Health Education
In Reynosa, Karely led interactive workshops at Escuelita La Cruz, reinforcing health lessons through games and open discussion.

She also led a child sexual abuse prevention session using an age-appropriate activity called “My Body’s Traffic Light.” Children learned:
  • Their body belongs to them
  • Touch requires consent
  • What to do if something feels unsafe
Although it’s a sensitive topic, the children participated thoughtfully and felt comfortable sharing what helps them feel safe.

Karely also connected with new community centers in Matamoros and Reynosa to expand ongoing women’s health talks and dignity kit distribution.

Infrastructure & Stability
At Casa Lulu, plumbing repairs were completed, and shade upgrades continued to prevent exposure to water and extreme heat.

In Tapachula:
  • Hundreds of hygiene kits were distributed
  • Security fencing at Belén Shelter is nearing completion
In unstable environments, infrastructure is risk reduction.

🇺🇦 Ukraine
This month marks an important milestone in our work at Phoenix House.

We are officially hiring our first local staff member in Ukraine!

Lina is Ukrainian and has been involved at the shelter from the beginning. By formally joining our team as a part-time Program Manager, she will lead STEM and women’s health programming directly on site.

Until now, our presence at Phoenix House has focused primarily on infrastructure, hygiene, and sanitation support.

Hiring Lina deepens our work. It allows us to move from supporting physical systems to strengthening daily programming with consistent classes, mentorship, and education led by someone rooted in the community.

Alongside this growth, well construction is underway with support from Xylem Watermark. Once complete, all 37 residents will have consistent water access across the shelter wing.

Next project: a disability-accessible bathroom.

Infrastructure creates stability. Local leadership builds continuity.

🇯🇴 Jordan
This month, Lara held our first menstrual health workshop in Jordan!

Workshops in Souf Camp and Gaza Camp reached 42 girls, covering menstrual health, personal hygiene, and stigma reduction. Each participant received a dignity kit so the information shared can be put into practice at home.

Launching this programming is a meaningful step in expanding women’s health support in the region.

In Za’atari Camp, sanitation renovations were also completed and hygiene supplies distributed. Safe, functional bathrooms:
  • Support health
  • Improve privacy
  • Strengthen dignity
We documented the renovation process in detail. 👉 View the Bathroom Renovation StoryMap

🌙 Ramadan: Supporting Jordan Projects
As Ramadan begins, we are launching a focused fundraiser to support our Jordan-based work. Your support will help us:
  • Expand menstrual health workshops
  • Distribute dignity kits
  • Maintain safe sanitation infrastructure

Across Mexico, Ukraine, and Jordan, the work continues. Steady, practical, and increasingly rooted in local leadership.

Thank you for being part of it.
