There’s something about photographing a project that makes you see it all over again—and our River House on the Sabinal feels especially meaningful now that it’s been captured through the lens. Tucked along the banks of the river, this log cabin is a backdrop for slow mornings, damp towels slung over railings, and the steady rhythm of water moving just beyond the porch.

 

When we were invited to reimagine the home, it wasn’t about starting over. It was about paying attention. We had the privilege of collaborating with a talented family member—an emerging designer based in Houston—which made the process even more layered and personal. Together, we introduced thoughtful updates—fresh drapery that softens the light, new linens that wrap you in warmth, and vintage pieces that anchor the home in its history.

 

The result isn’t flashy. It’s better than that. It’s warm, relaxed, and personal. Every room feels collected rather than decorated—like it evolved naturally over time. There’s an ease to the River House now that mirrors its setting: unhurried, welcoming! It’s the kind of place where there is always motion, bare feet are the norm, and summer seems to last just a bit longer.

 

We’re so excited to finally share this special retreat with you. It’s a reminder that good design doesn’t always shout—sometimes it simply bubbles along with the river.

Tucked within the main living area, this cozy game room is layered with story and soul. Rich leather, a tailored plaid wingback, and a substantial wood coffee table ground the room, while the vintage textile and striking portrait add depth and heritage against the warm log walls. It’s the kind of space made for late-night card games, quiet morning coffee, and conversations that unfold slowly—intimate and genuinely personal.

This is where mornings begin slowly and evenings linger a little longer. Framed by knotty pine and layered with natural textures, the River House dining room balances rustic charm with understated elegance—woven chair backs, a sculptural iron chandelier, deep navy as the focus color, and a table ready for everything from pancakes to candlelit dinners. It’s relaxed but refined, designed for gathering, storytelling, and staying awhile.

The bunk-room sitting area carries that unmistakable summer camp spirit—cozy, nostalgic, and the perfect spot to open a book or simply gaze out the window at the river. The stained glass pendant casts a soft glow over the mix of rustic wood seating, creating a setting that feels lost in time.
