Laurie's Corner

I recently heard Dr. Laurie Santos speak through
"The Distinguished Speaker Series" about the science of happiness. Dr. Laurie Santos is a Yale Professor, host of The Happiness Lab podcast, and teaches the most popular course at Yale University.

After her speech, one thing became clear: happiness isn’t something that just happens to us—it’s something we practice.
01
Dr. Laurie Santos' 10 science-backed happiness habits:
  1. Prioritize your happiness before productivity—when you do, your performance actually improves.
  2. Make time for in person social connections. Relationships matter more than we think.
  3. Give back and help others. Generosity boosts joy for everyone involved.
  4. Practice gratitude. Notice what’s already good in your life. Tap into the feeling state.
  5. Support your body with healthy daily practices, like exercise, whole healthy foods, and 8 hours of sleep.
  6. Be present and savor the small moments.
  7. Feel your feelings—even the uncomfortable and icky ones.
  8. Treat yourself with self-compassion, not criticism.
  9. Love your work by leaning into your strengths.
  10. Measure wealth in time, not just money.
A powerful reminder that the good life is less about achievement—and more about presence, connection, and intention.

Which one of these are you leaning into right now? Respond to this email and let me know. The one that resonated with me was “savoring the small moments". And keep your eye open for a solo podcast on this topic where I'll dive deeper into the importance of all 10 items.

Why It Works:
Old emotional patterns live in the body as well as the brain. When you pause, feel, and respond differently—even in small ways—you begin to discharge stuck energy, soothe the nervous system, and create new neural pathways to start making different decisions for yourself.
