A major renovation at Lake Tahoe, a new bar headed to California Avenue, a brewing ownership shift, a 20-year anniversary, a sad goodbye, and a recent closure reflect the continued evolution of our local food-and-drink community.

This week’s feature stories turn to tea, examining the craft and cultural traditions behind enduring blends. One story steps inside a Reno tea shop to explore hand-blended loose-leaf teas, while another traces the history of yerba mate — from its Indigenous roots in South America to its role in daily ritual and gathering.

You’ll also find upcoming classes, festivals, and hands-on experiences taking place around the region.

Known for their holistic benefits, loose-leaf tea blends have been enjoyed for centuries, and at Too Soul Tea Co. in Reno, the options are seemingly endless when it comes to combining these soothing ingredients. Morgan Nott, general manager at the tea shop, has honed the craft of tea blends with several in-house varieties and encourages staff members to create versions by hand to help customers with what ails them.

TEA TRADITION
written and photographed by Claudia Cruz

Yerba mate (pronounced ma-TAY) is a plant endemic to Paraguay and Argentina that also grows in southern Brazil, Chile, Bolivia, and Uruguay. Originally cultivated by the indigenous Guaraní, Tupi, and Quechua people, the caffeinated herb was commercialized by the colonizing Europeans after their arrival.
