She then continued to share that she was raised by immigrant parents and deeply wanted to speak out about ICE and the atrocities happening in Minnesota. She runs a design agency focused on amplifying social impact organizations.
Despite seeing a clear connection to her values, she wasn’t sure how to best share this personal story.
She was questioning whether it was appropriate for her primary marketing channel or worth posting at all.
And my biz bestie and I both looked at her when she was done pouring her heart out to us and said the same thing:
That story is ABSOLUTELY worth sharing.
And surprisingly, this isn’t the first time I’ve seen accomplished women with incredible stories silence themselves out of fear of coming off imperfect. My clients and friends will focus so much on delivering their story perfectly that they end up not sharing it at all.
It’s wild how quickly we disqualify ourselves. How fast we critique and hold ourselves back from being and showing our true selves.
I do it too! It's part of the reason I've been in a creative rut this year.
But our stories, our imperfections, and our experiences are what set us apart.
The more we overthink, the heavier it gets.
Something that should feel light and connective starts to feel like a burden.
It becomes another mental tab open. Another thing to optimize. Another invisible weight. That's the mental load of marketing.
And if you’re leading a team, creating based on shoulds, and thinking for everyone else… that extra load is what tips it from fun to exhausting. That’s when I encourage marketers to disconnect and step back so they can rediscover what once brought them so much joy.
So now I’m curious:
Have you ever held back a story because you thought it wasn’t “worth” sharing?
Hit reply and tell me. I really want to know.
XOXO,
Renee
