Hi stranger,

Welcome to our newsletter space. If you’re reading this, a friend has shared it with you. We are Malika Favre and George Wu, the duo behind I Can’t Afford This But Maybe She Can, a curated corner of colour, design and beautifully made things.

This week, we lean into our lifelong animal obsession with a Bazaar edit for the wild at heart, before diving into the story behind our favourite feline boots.

Have a read, and if you like what you see, you can join our community via this link.

Enjoy the read.

Animals have been muses for artists and designers for centuries. Long before branding existed, the lion, the dove and the serpent were already doing the storytelling. From cave walls to cathedral carvings, heraldry to haute couture, we have worn their symbols and borrowed their swagger.

We are all for it. Meet our favourite feral beauties, crafted by makers and artists we love.

The Story of…the Cat Shoes returns with our favourite family of feline boots by British animator turned shoemaker Jocie Juritz. Through a series of questions about process, craft and obsession, we trace how a love project grew into a full collection.

As an exclusive treat, all of Jocie’s shoes are 15% off until March 10. The discount applies automatically at checkout or with code CURATEDBYMALIKA.

Enjoy the read!

Where is Home?
London, born and bred. I’ve lived all over, but currently I’m South East.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
Anything and everything creative - an artist, musician, fashion designer. It changed constantly and still does.

An origin story?
I made a pair of shoes out of clay, aged 6… but a career in design didn’t occur to me until 2021.
Where were you when lightning struck?
Relegated to my childhood bedroom during lockdown.

Who inspired them?
My two cats,
Ziggy and Etta.
An early sketch?
This is the first sketch. I remember thinking it would look very garish in real life…
A starting block?
The ‘I Can Make Shoes’ course.
I’d always sewn, but that how I got into shoemaking. The founder Amanda,
is to thank for it.
A Challenge?
Keeping my energy up when there’s no one else to bounce off!

A happy accident?
Every good design feels like a happy accident!

In reality it’s months of practice, and bad sketches, finally aligning.
A small disaster?
Too many to count!
Delays, shipping issues, unexpected fees, bad decisions.

There’s something new to navigate every week, but it teaches you a lot.

A critic?
The few people offended by the cat b*ttholes on some of my shoes.
An unexpected praise?
“I don’t even like cats, but I love
your shoes.”
A scoop?
A new collection is so nearly ready - for those who are artists at heart…
