First name / Dear reader, I have an experiment I think you should try…

What if you go on a walk and

NOT

WEAR

HEADPHONES?!?!
Taylor swift saying mindblown while holding a grammy
I’ve been reading and thinking about how we’re all turning into overstimulated, over-informed, and over-entertained robots.

Don’t you feel it too?

The constant itch to fill every minute of your waking life with something that gives you a dopamine hit?

The anxiety that there are too many books, podcasts, and articles to consume but never enough time?

The restless urge to be “productive” and the odd idea that consuming = being productive?

Sometimes, I feel like my inner voice and I have gone from friends to acquaintances because I truly don’t spend enough time with her!

So lately, when I’m on a walk, I’ve begun to pause the song or podcast I was listening to and just… walk.

To go on a walk WITH myself.

I’m actually on a walk right now and my airpods are disconnected.

I feel the sun toasting my skin.

I can hear birds all around me, and they each have a unique sound.

I can hear a construction happening nearby, and when I look up, I notice a whole apartment building has gone up next to the park I walk in every day. (When did that happen?!?)

An old man just passed me by and said, “buen dia" (good morning).  I say it back and wonder if he would’ve been met with silence if I had been listening to a podcast.

I’m enjoying this walk so much, I don’t want it to be over.

If you try it, I’d love to hear about how it went, but while we’re at it, I have another experiment for you to try!

One that literally takes about 5 minutes and has the potential to significantly increase your podcast’s visibility.

Add keywords to your podcast name

Yesterday, a client messaged me asking for tips on how to get her podcast to show up on Apple Podcasts.

Her podcast is literally a top 2% global podcast, super popular in her niche, and yet, if you searched for keywords related to her show on Apple Podcasts, her podcast did not show up.

And a bunch of the podcasts that do show up seem super obscure.

One is literally titled “Real Estate” and has only posted two episodes EVER: one in 2019 and another in 2020!!!

So what gives?

According to Apple Podcasts themselves, they order search results by:
  • “Metadata: this includes the show name, channel name, and episode title
  • Popularity: podcasts with large followers and plays in Apple Podcasts
  • User Behavior: podcasts with high engagement, such as those that are played or followed from search results”

Interestingly, ratings, reviews, and how often your podcast is shared are NOT factored into search results!

So what does this mean for you???

You gotta prioritize that metadata, including your show’s name!

A strategy that I’ve been seeing a lot lately is adding a super short description with your main keywords right after your podcast name.

For instance, this guy shared how his podcast used to be called How I Built It, but later he changed it to How I Built It — Case Studies & Coaching for Creators and Solopreneurs and saw a “20% increase in downloads month over month without doing anything else differently."

Go on Apple Podcasts right now and search for a keyword that’s relevant to your niche, and you’ll see the following:
  1. The top shows are probably super popular AND have the keyword in the podcast name.
  2. The rest of the shows have the keyword in the name, but might not be super popular.
  3. The shows that appear are not stuffing the name with keywords. The name remains short and simple, no more than 2 lines.
Example: I searched for the keyword “ADHD.” Here are the results:
Screenshot of search results
Notice how ALL of them have the keyword in the name!

Update on my client who added keywords to the name: She ended up adding the keywords “social media marketing,” “personal branding,” and “real estate agents,” and now her podcast is showing up in Apple Podcasts for ALL THREE SEARCH TERMS.

THE DAY AFTER SHE UPDATED THE NAME!

This means that now, when people search for podcasts about these topics, they will find her podcast.

Which means more potential listeners and downloads!!!

So I believe it’s 100% worth a try!
PODCAST RECOMMENDATION
Cover art for episode showing host and guest and the words: The Brain at Rest
“the art of doing nothing” from Curiouser and curiouser

Started listening to this episode today as I made breakfast, and it perfectly matched the theme of today’s newsletter, so I had to share.

You would think a conversation about doing nothing would be boring, but I found myself so engrossed in it. The host and guest are both Dutch, and it was fascinating to hear about how traditional Dutch culture values doing nothing, but globalization is slowly eroding this in younger generations.

They also went into the resurgence of hobbies, and how the Internet makes us turn hobbies into productive endeavors too! (Which I see myself doing tbh)

Shownotes:

“today i am joined by Leora Aileen to discuss the philosophy and science of doing nothing”
RECIPE OF THE WEEK

Today’s newsletter should’ve been titled “boring things that are actually fun and good for you.” This recipe is a prime example.

I was in the supermarket last week and saw a bag of organic French green beans. They looked beautifully bright green and crisp, so I bought them without a plan and found this recipe.

I swapped the one shallot for an entire sliced onion (because my husband and I can never have too many onions), and we served them with salmon and bread.

They were so shockingly delicious, we’re making them again this week!
🥂 Cheers,
Adrienne
