Hi there, Last Friday night, I received an automated call from my daughter’s school saying she had missed second period. When I asked her about that absence, she explained that she had attended a student protest about immigration enforcement at her school. So we had one of those very real parenting conversations where safety, values, and the law all collide. And it reminded me of something I’ve learned about myself through experiences like these. When things feel uncertain or emotionally charged, I go back to the law, not because the moment isn’t urgent, but because understanding creates informed action. That’s what today’s episode is about. |
I walk through what immigration enforcement agents can legally do, what constitutional protections still apply, and how families and communities can prepare when the stakes feel high. Here are a few practical things worth understanding: • ICE can generally enter public spaces without a warrant, but private spaces typically require consent or a judicial warrant. • Reasonable suspicion allows a stop. Probable cause allows an arrest. • Constitutional protections like due process apply to all persons, not just US citizens. • Preparation — knowing who to call and where your documents are — can reduce chaos in a crisis. |
Today’s episode is about understanding systems, risks, and preparation. And that’s what death readiness has always been about. While preparation doesn’t eliminate uncertainty, it does gives you a way to respond with intention instead of fear. |
And if this episode makes you think about how prepared your own family would be in an emergency — legal, medical, or otherwise — I designed The Death Readiness Playbook to help you make informed decisions and organize the information someone would need if you couldn’t speak for yourself. |
Knowing your rights doesn’t eliminate risk. But understanding them helps you decide how to act, and why. |
