On March 19, LULU will host a special evening with Alice Waters, David Tanis and our friends at The Henry Ford in celebration of a shared mission: that every child deserves a real school lunch made with fresh, seasonal food grown by local farmers and cooked from scratch.

The evening begins at LULU, where Alice and David will serve a special $85 prix fixe menu created for the occasion. After dinner, guests are invited to a free screening of The Henry Ford’s documentary Farm to School Lunch Across America at the Billy Wilder Theater. The film follows The Henry Ford’s national initiative visiting schools around the country to show what school meals can look like when they begin with the farm.

Alice has worked closely with The Henry Ford organization through their efforts in edible education, helping bring attention to the connection between farming, cooking, and learning. Together they have continued to insist on a straightforward idea that school lunch belongs at the center of education. When children eat well they learn about the land, the seasons, and the people who grow their food.

It’s an idea Alice has carried for many years, and one we hold close here at LULU. This week the Lulu Project will prepare another free school lunch for students visiting the Hammer Museum, and the kitchen is already at work.

The film tells the same story. We hope you’ll join us on March 19.
