Behaviors build habits and habits build a culture of being able to tackle difficult conversations.
Here are a few simple habits that can turn the tense moment you've been avoiding into your best conversation yet.
Admit the awkwardness. You might start with, “This might feel a little uncomfortable, but it’s worth talking through.”
Keep the work at the center. Try asking, “What needs to be true to make this go right next time?”
Lead with curiosity. Instead of assuming motives, ask what led to the decision or what support might help moving forward.
Be clear and helpful. For example: “It seems that we are missing deadlines because we haven’t clarified ownership yet.”
Direct and compassionate beats silent and frustrated every time.
✅ This week’s challenge
Identify one conversation you’ve been avoiding.
Before the conversation:
- Write down the problem you’re trying to solve.
- Identify your role in the conversation.
- Plan one curious question you will ask.
Then have the conversation this week.
Try it. Let me know how it goes.
