ISSUE #31 | March 9, 2026

Hi, it's Miriam.

Welcome back to the At Work Tune Up, your insider’s playbook with practical, quick, tips on how to keep things happy and healthy at work.

We spend a lot of time at work. We should love what we do.

Let's get started.

This week's tip for your toolbox:

Learn to love conflict.

Most teams say they want honest conversations. Far fewer know how to have them.

When tension shows up, many teams either avoid the issue or escalate it into an unprofessional and uncomfortable scene. Neither helps the work move forward.

The healthiest teams learn a different skill. They keep the work at the center and argue about ideas without making it personal.

I know it's uncomfortable.
I know it's awkward.

But it gets better the more you engage.

How to get started? Keep reading ⬇️

This week's tune-up:

Start by reading this Quick-Guide to difficult conversations.

Behaviors build habits and habits build a culture of being able to tackle difficult conversations.

Here are a few simple habits that can turn the tense moment you've been avoiding into your best conversation yet.

Admit the awkwardness. You might start with, “This might feel a little uncomfortable, but it’s worth talking through.”

Keep the work at the center. Try asking, “What needs to be true to make this go right next time?”

Lead with curiosity. Instead of assuming motives, ask what led to the decision or what support might help moving forward.

Be clear and helpful. For example: “It seems that we are missing deadlines because we haven’t clarified ownership yet.”

Direct and compassionate beats silent and frustrated every time.

✅ This week’s challenge

Identify one conversation you’ve been avoiding.
Before the conversation:
  1. Write down the problem you’re trying to solve.
  2. Identify your role in the conversation.
  3. Plan one curious question you will ask.
Then have the conversation this week.

Try it. Let me know how it goes.

  3. Book me as a retreat facilitator or speaker. I've never met a team that regretted investing in time away from the office to reset. I'd love to work with you. Please reply to this email or email me directly.

Small changes make a big difference.

Just get started.
