Foodshed Forum Fairfield County is a program of The Foodshed Network.

Thank you for participating in Meet The Makers: Greenwich’s Artisanal Food Community. It was a wonderful and engaging conversation! We would like to extend a special thank you to Nick Bridge and the Sam Bridge Nursery team for hosting us in their beautiful greenhouse, and to our panelists for speaking so thoughtfully.

Key Insights on Sustaining Independent Businesses:
  • Educating customers: Purchasing artisan products (like cheese) supports fair labor, sustainable land stewardship, and humane animal practices.
  • Transparency: Sharing the "where" and "how" behind products.
  • Legacy: Working closely with family to sustain and pass on the craft.
  • Quality over quantity: A steadfast commitment to artisanal integrity over industrial mass production.
  • Values-driven decisions: Staying true to core principles when setting prices and sourcing ingredients.
How Consumers Can Foster a Thriving Food Culture:
  • Shop "off-season": Support local makers and farmers's markets during the quieter months after the holidays, even on rainy days because every sale makes a difference.
  • Make it daily: Integrate high-quality food into your everyday diet; it doesn’t have to be reserved for special occasions.
  • Invest locally: Supporting the regional food economy creates demand, provides resources for growth, and eventually leads to universal access.
Together, we have the power to opt-out of the industrial system, shift our priorities, and invest in the businesses and people right here in our community.
