At Rituals Salon & Spa, beauty goes beyond what you see in the mirror. We believe true beauty is rooted in care: care for our guests, our team, and the environment. With Earth Day on April 22nd, we wanted to share some of the ways sustainability is woven into our everyday rituals!

At our salon, we have what we call focus groups. These are small-team groups that help organize different parts of our business and give our team a hands-on role in shaping the Rituals experience, our values, and how we serve our community. Some of these groups include philanthropy, marketing, retail, special events, and sustainability.

I'm Eva, the leader of our sustainability focus group! Our team’s goal is simple: to help reduce our salon’s carbon footprint (which just means lowering the impact we have on the environment). The beauty industry is one of the larger contributors to waste in landfills and waterways, and we are committed to finding better, more responsible ways to handle that waste.

At Rituals, we believe sustainability isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being intentional. Making better choices where we can, improving where we can, and always looking for ways to care for our guests, our team, and our planet.

Why Did We Start Recycling? Why Was It Important To Rituals?

“Rituals was becoming a larger salon day by day, which meant so was our waste. Our largest contribution was hair color and hair clippings. We wanted to do something better. We were unable to recycle locally how we wanted and had to outsource to be able to include miscellaneous beauty waste such as nail files, gloves, excess color, hair clippings, color tubes, and more. After hearing about oil spill after oil spill, it really influenced us to find a way our salon could do our part. This is how we were introduced to Green Circle Salons in 2014.” - Jessica, Director of Operations

One of our most recent projects was creating a salon library where clients and service providers alike can exchange used books. Helping to deter the need for the revolving door of pop-culture magazines and other printed single-use materials that have an unsaid expiration date. Unfortunately, Harry Styles breaking up with Olivia Wilde is only relevant for so long.

Another recent project was a salon-wide Valentine’s Day exchange using recycled paper hearts and reworked postage boxes to help spread some love to our service providers! It was a simple but meaningful way to spread kindness while reusing materials we already had.

Sustainability Snapshot: In 2025, we made a conscious effort to rethink how we use paper in our daily operations. By introducing QR codes, reusable tip envelopes, emailed receipts, and reducing unnecessary printing, we successfully reduced our paper waste by 70%. It’s a reminder that sustainability isn’t always about big changes.

Green Circle is a company designed to help busy salons recover 95% of beauty waste and significantly reduce salons' carbon footprints. Allowing us to recycle everything from the usual plastics, glass, and metal to more obscure things like hair clippings, mannequin heads, excess hair color, used pedicure flip-flops, wax strips, and much more! Since the start of our collaboration, we have successfully recycled, on average, about 3,500 lbs of beauty waste annually, which is something we are extremely proud of!

Sustainability Snapshot: 63,000 pounds of hair are thrown away every single day. Recovered hair can be repurposed into booms that help clean up oil spills!

The products we use matter. That's why Rituals chooses to partner with brands that share our commitment to sustainability, like Davines, Eufora, Eminence, and more! Davines Haircare is a perfect example of a company that embodies our ecological philosophy. They are both BCORP and Plastic Net Zero certified! In other words, they meet high standards for environmental and social responsibility. However, their impact goes beyond certifications! Davines uses reusable, food-safe packaging to encourage repurposing and reducing waste and supports regenerative, organic agriculture to promote biodiversity and soil health.

We also proudly carry Eminence Organic Skincare and Keune Haircosmetics! Both are BCORP certified as well! Eufora strives to connect their passion for protecting the planet and its people by practicing the most conscious and responsible manufacturing, ingredient harvesting, and socially fair trade processes available. Further reflecting our dedication to beauty that is both ethical and sustainable. Together, these partnerships allow us to offer services that align with a greater mission: creating beauty that supports a healthier planet. When you receive a service at Rituals, you can feel confident knowing the products we use reflect our commitment to both results and responsibility.

Sustainability Snapshot: For every Eminence product sold, a tree is planted through their Forests for the Future program. With your help, Rituals has planted 18,192 trees!

As a client, we hope this small glimpse into our sustainability efforts gives you peace of mind—knowing that every bottle of shampoo, excess color, used foils, and leftover hair from your service will be properly disposed of and recycled behind closed doors. The products our service providers place in your hands are intentionally chosen not only to support you, but also our Earth.

Most importantly, we want to say thank you. Thank you for choosing a salon that cares about you and the planet. Your continued support has granted us the opportunity to help combat climate change together.
