Hi Friends! In February, I spent time in Oaxaca, Mexico, soaking in an inspiring mix of color, craft, and culture. We visited artisan studios, learned from local makers, and created new work along the way. I’ve gathered a few highlights in two Instagram posts: Oaxaca art and Oaxaca sites. Below I've narrowed the inspiration down to just “three bits” that seem truly representative of this beautiful part of the world.  Keep reading for news about current exhibitions, a five-day workshop in New York, and a handful of things I've enjoyed recently.  Cheers! |

1. Cochineal We visited Edgar Jahir’s studio, where he cultivates and processes cochineal into dye. I was especially inspired by the range of colors he creates by mixing cochineal with other natural materials. I don’t usually work in this palette: lavender to deep purple to orange, red, and fuchsia, but it’s so compelling. While I don’t typically use dyes, I’ll be on the lookout for fabrics in these rich hues. 2. Natural Dyes Beyond learning about cochineal, we visited a weaving studio and a yarn shop filled with deep colors created entirely from natural materials, using techniques passed down for generations. It deepened my appreciation for the many steps, and the immense labor, behind the materials we use in fiber art. I brought home a few skeins of yarn, and when I incorporate them into my work, I’ll have a deeper sense of gratitude for the artisans who made them possible. 3. Courtyards Oaxaca is full of beautiful courtyards lush with plants and dappled sunlight. Some felt quiet and contemplative; others were vibrant and full of movement. I’m drawn to architecture that blurs the boundary between inside and out, and I’m eager to explore how those elements might translate into my art quilt collages. |

Highlights & Recommendations - I'm a birder and loved the independent documentary about birdwatching Listers. It's so irreverent, sweet and fun!
- Memoir is one of my favorite book genres. Poets Square: A Memoir in Thirty Cats was a delight.
- ThimTec is moldable, skin-hugging tape that you can use to make your own thimble. I really like it. You can build up protection exactly where the needle hits your finger.
- I loved the podcast episode of The Quilter on Fire with artist Lisa Solomon. Brandy asked great quilter-specific questions and Lisa responded from an artist point of view.
- I loved this episode of Hyperfixed podcast about a guy who saw a problem and figured out how to solve it.
- This CreativeSpark event looks inspiring and fun! Quilt Spark Live on April 30. Click this link and you'll see a $20 discount in your cart when you register.

I want to add that I’m feeling so much anger and grief about the overwhelming challenges in the U.S. There are too many to name. When I reach out to the folks who have signed up to receive this newsletter, I often feel like I need to say something more. Making art and being a creative professional in this chaotic time sometimes feels like a total disconnect. Sometimes it feels like a small way to hold on to humanity. I'm doing my best to balance those realities.  During my time in Mexico, I loved connecting with others, working with my hands, and expanding my understanding of the world. It felt like one way to focus on dignity and possibility. I hope you're finding your own ways to connection, creativity, and possibility. |
