A Note from Julie, the Greenhouse Curator: |

I usually share photos of my plants when they’re looking their best—healthy leaves and new growth. This week, I’m sharing a photo of a not-so-perfect leaf. 🫤 I bought this Calkins Gold philodendron a few weeks ago, and I’ve been enjoying it so much. Yesterday, I noticed a brown, watery bubble on one of the leaves. After doing a little research, I learned it was caused by edema, a buildup of excess water inside the leaf. I guess I'd watered the plant too often. |

I’ve been thinking about how easy it is to do the same thing in our proofreading or editing work. We take on a new client, pick up a few new projects, or finally start getting consistent inquiries. It’s easy to feel the pull to take on more, and our first instinct is to say yes—not because we’re careless, but because we’re excited and don’t want to miss out on the income. But sometimes, it’s a little too much, too soon. It’s not just about how much we take in. It’s about whether we’re ready to handle it. Here are a few things to keep in mind when work starts to pick up: - Pause before saying yes: Give yourself a little space to look at your schedule clearly.
- Check your real capacity: Consider not just your time, but your focus and energy too.
- Build in a buffer: Add extra time, especially with new clients or unfamiliar material.
- Create simple systems you can rely on: Use a style sheet, a checklist, or a place to track things you find yourself looking up over and over.
I’ll probably end up cutting this leaf off my philodendron since that mark isn’t going anywhere. The plant is still growing beautifully, though. Now that I’ve adjusted my watering approach, I’m curious to see how it grows from here. 🪴 |

Here are three posts I enjoyed reading on LinkedIn recently. Click the links below to read them. - Why your business needs an annual report: Hazel shares how writing an annual report for her freelance business gives her clarity. I think this is a great way to track growth as an editor or proofreader. It’s a reminder to step back, look at what’s working, and define what you want to improve. 📊
- The small shift that makes client work way easier: Jenna shows how a small shift uncovers differences in how people work. Editors and proofreaders sometimes experience this with clients around feedback, timing, and communication. It’s a reminder that what feels like friction might just be a mismatch in working styles. 🤝
- Which tiny annoyance drives you the craziest? This post isn't related to proofreading, but I couldn't resist sharing it with you. Which of the everyday annoyances from Nick's list wins the bracket for you? 😅

Many of the errors I share in this section of The Leaflet involve spelling mistakes, but this one is a punctuation and spacing error. high-water mark: the line showing the highest level reached, whether by water or anything else at its peak Catch of the Week screenshots come from my transcript proofreading. I can't change what a person said, but I can make sure words are spelled correctly and punctuation marks are in the right spots. If you're interested in learning more about transcript proofreading, I wrote an article about it here. |

Spring arrived this week, and it’s a good reminder of how quickly things can change. Not long ago, this flower bed at Reynolda Gardens was bare. Now it’s full of color. 🌷 |
