Happy Sunday Everyone! This week I want to talk about burnout. I am seeing more and more people struggling with burnout but are not aware that is the issue. Our society tells us we have to keep pushing, keep busy. And the problem is eventually our mental health and physical health says stop and rest for a bit, but we fail to listen because we feel guilty if we stop and rest. We feel like we are wasting time. But are we really? Malvern Behavioral Health describes burnout as a state of deep exhaustion caused by prolonged stress, commonly categorized into three main types based on the cause: Overload (working too hard), Under-challenged (lack of stimulation), and Neglect (feeling helpless or unsupported). Recognizing these types—often characterized by mental exhaustion, cynicism, and reduced performance—is key to finding the right recovery strategy. Key Types of Burnout - Overload/Frenetic Burnout: Characterized by high dedication and working at a frantic pace, leading to exhaustion, as described by Psychology Today and Malvern Behavioral Health. People with this type are often perfectionists who overwork to compensate for inadequacies, leading to a "law of compensation" effect.
- Under-challenged/Misalignment Burnout: Occurs in a repetitive, unstimulating environment, or when work does not align with your core values, leading to boredom and cynicism. People with this type feel that their work is meaningless and fail to see how they make an impact, notes Cedar Counseling & Wellness.
- Neglect/Worn-out Burnout: Results from feeling helpless or unsupported, which often develops into "learned helplessness" or a sense that nothing one does makes a difference. It is characterized by a "give up" attitude, where individuals become neglectful, explains NorthKey and Psychology Today Canada.
Key Symptoms of Burnout - Physical: Extreme tiredness, recurring headaches, stomach issues, and getting sick often.
- Mental/Emotional: Hopelessness, self-doubt, failure, and cynicism.
- Behavioral: Social isolation, reduced performance, and anger outbursts.
If you are experiencing burnout are you able to identify which one? What are ways you support yourself during burnout? Do you allow yourself to stop and take a breath or do you ignore it and keep pushing until you become ill? I used to be the one that kept pushing because that was what I was taught. I was taught that you never call out sick from work unless you were running a fever. I was taught that idle hands are the devils workshop and wasting time was a sin. But what I learned is all of that is garbage. Self care if vital to your success. If we do not take care of our mind, body and soul we will eventually collapse either from fatigue or illness. It is important to learn to listen to your body's needs and allow yourself to honor them. The resources for this article suggest the following to help recover from burnout: Key Burnout Treatment Strategies - Prioritize Self-Care: Focus on physical health, including 7-9 hours of sleep, regular exercise, and a balanced diet to replenish energy.
- Set Boundaries: Learn to say no, reduce overtime, and create clear distinctions between work and personal time
- Re-evaluate Goals: Reassess your goals and values to ensure they align with your well-being.
- Seek Professional Help: Therapy, particularly cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), can provide coping tools and support. Other options include mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) and yoga.
- Adjust Work Habits: Delegate tasks, organize your workspace, and have honest conversations with supervisors about workload.
- Engage in Hobbies: Dedicate time to activities that bring joy and are not related to productivity.
- Build Support Systems: Connect with friends, family, or colleagues for support to lessen the feeling of being alone.
Remember YOU matter and so does your health. Learn that it is ok to practice self care, make it a normal activity. One way I practice self care is every week I have a ME day. This is a day (Fridays) that I do whatever I want to do even if it is nothing. I tend not to answer my phone on that day. It is a day where I take care of my needs, no exceptions. Do you have a ME day? What are things you enjoy doing that recharge you? Do you give yourself permission to do them? Or do you still put everyone else first? May you all discover the healing power of self care! . Resources for this e-news - Malvern Behavioral Health
