Consolidation in the Sector - Next Steps |
|
Hello First name / community member, We all know there is a lot of conversation about consolidation in the nonprofit sector, from overlapping services, to reduced funding, to challenges finding staff to support the work. Articles on LinkedIn, from consultants and from community leaders all talk about opportunities for sharing services, reducing back-end expenses, changing business models in this new environment. NPN has been quietly building a practice around consolidations with the support of team members with experience in this area, offering to support smaller organizations as they move through this process, participating in larger consolidations as a partner, working with our interim leaders and executive search placements to support transitions, and more. At a recent workshop with the Nonprofit Association of Oregon, we shared this slide of a possible consolidation process. |

Sharing it here because this work isn’t a secret or a mystery. It is a process that can sometimes be long or frustrating, but always informative and focused on purpose and the overall nonprofit ecosystem. For the purpose, we ask: How can a different structure help an organization effectively meet the purpose they were created? And this question goes beyond and is bigger than a single organization's mission. Purpose looks at the systemic reason the organization exists, the greater cause that goes beyond any single organization. For the overall ecosystem, we ask: - How does the organization fit in the current ecosystem?
- Who else is doing this work?
- How are they doing this work?
- What is missing and how are we working together?
If your organization has been considering consolidation, we're here to support and happy to talk with board members and nonprofit leaders about the next steps, opportunities, and challenges. Think of this as another strategic tool to add to your conversations as we continue to adapt to meet the needs of our community. |
