After spending over a decade working in digital marketing agencies, I had developed a firm belief that, in order to be effective, marketing needed to be a 24/7 practice.

Once I started running my own side business, though, I quickly realised that this quantity over quality was not an effective (or healthy) strategy for small soul-led, creative businesses.

I noticed that when I was worrying about constantly showing up on social media or writing a weekly newsletter, my creative motivation and the joy I felt working on my business would disappear.

Then I started having health struggles. After being diagnosed with a chronic health condition late last year and running headfirst into burnout, I realised very quickly that my beliefs around marketing and how to show up in my business were no longer sustainable for my new body and mind.

I needed to carve out some time to really sit and reflect on all the beliefs I had around marketing and how they might be keeping me from creating a marketing strategy that better suited my personal and business needs.

I started to wonder…

Do I really have to show up on social media if I hate creating content for it?

Do I have to write a new blog every single week and make sure my SEO is absolutely perfect?

Do I really have to constantly adapt to keep up with all the latest algorithm changes?

Or can I…

Pick and choose which platforms and marketing channels I feel most energised to show up on?

Create blog content as and when I have something impactful and valuable to offer?

Ignore algorithms and always feeling like I'm fighting to show up on people's FYP's?

If you're like me and have developed a firm set of beliefs around marketing, I'd like to invite you to take some time over the next few days to think about what those are for you.

Try to challenge them. Rewrite those beliefs and create new ones that better fit the way you want to be able to do marketing in your business.

Don't be afraid to say exactly what it is you want from your marketing, even if you have the current belief that the way you want to do marketing isn't possible.

The first step is getting clear about what you want and need your marketing strategy to look like.

Feel free to reply to this email if you'd like to share your beliefs and any realisations you've had through this reflection. I'd love to hear what you've discovered!

I'll speak to you again soon,

Cat x
