"We'd like a King or Queen bed in each room, please."
Clients say this all the time, and I totally get it. You want a comfortable bed, especially while on vacation, so you can really rest.
The naming conventions for beds in Italy rarely align with American standards, so understanding what you're actually getting requires knowing how to read Italian bed descriptions.
European sizing doesn't translate the way you think it does.
Here's how Italian bed sizes actually translate:
- Super King — 75-79 × 79 inches (comparable to US King in width, slightly shorter)
- King — 67-71 × 79 inches (closer to a US Queen—this catches people off guard)
- Queen — 59-63 × 79 inches (narrower than US Queen, more like a generous Full)
- Double — 51-55 × 79 inches (comfortable for one, cozy for two)
- Single — 35-47 × 79 inches (ranges from narrow to generous)
The twin/double situation: You'll frequently see bedrooms described as "twin/double," meaning two single beds that can be joined with a mattress topper. It's practical and allows flexibility. If you do the math, when the two singles are joined, it measures like a King.
Unlike American hotels, Italian properties rarely place two beds in one room beyond dedicated twin bedrooms. This means the common Double Queen room in US hotels is nearly impossible to find in Italy.
So when you're reviewing room categories, now you'll know exactly what you're looking at!
