The Joy of Leadership

The New York Knicks winning feels like something bigger is cracking open. It isn't about basketball at all, not really. It's about something we've been starving for and didn't even know how to name: Collective Effervescence.

Émile Durkheim coined the term over a century ago, watching people gather around fires, rituals, sacred things — and noticing that something happens to us when we come together around something larger than ourselves.

We are transformed.

Collective Effervescence is what happens when thousands, millions, of strangers feel the exact same thing at the exact same moment.

Joy.
Hope.
Anticipation.
Belonging.
Together.
A ritual.
A belief.
A shared purpose.

And in that moment — for just a moment — everything that usually divides us simply dissolves.

Politics.
Income.
Age.
Background.

People remembering how to gather. How to celebrate. How to dream out loud, together, unguarded.

Collective Effervescence is proof of something we forget too easily: that joy is just as contagious as fear. That courage spreads exactly the way anxiety does. We get to choose which one we feed.

And here's what moves me most — what I'm witnessing isn't the product of ownership, or billionaires in courtside seats, or polished celebrity moments, or some decision made in a boardroom by people in suits. This kind of joy can't be manufactured from the top down. It is built, day after day, by a community of people who show up and choose — again and again — to build something bigger than their own name, their own glory, their own highlight reel. It is the people closest to the work, the ones with the least recognition and the most heart, who generate this electricity when they commit to each other and believe in something shared.

Leadership is hard. It can be brutally lonely. But it also carries within it an extraordinary, almost unbelievable power: the power to create joy. Real joy. The kind that starts as a spark inside a team, a company, a program — and grows until it spills out into the streets, into a city, into strangers hugging strangers.

This is what makes us human. Not the wins. Not the numbers. The joy. The shared breath. The laughter. The creativity. The feeling of being part of something alive. That's the gift. And it's ours to keep giving.

I want to introduce you to someone special. My co-facilitator and dear friend Whitney Swander. Whitney and I have been friends and colleagues for about 10 years. We have seen each other through many phases and evolutions. We've learned, unlearned, and given each other the one thing everyone yearns for: permission to change. Through this note from Whitney I hope you get a glimpse of how special she is and the good hands you will be in at the retreat.

A note from Whitney

One of the things I've learned intimately over the past few years is that a life and career can look really good from the outside and be asking for your attention from the inside.

I've also learned that most of us already know more than we think we do. What we often lack is the time, space, and conditions to really tune in and listen.

Beneath the noise, the expectations, the obligations, and the endless stream of advice that women are conditioned to pay close attention to, there is also a calm, wise voice. The one that knows what’s true for you.

That's what excited me most when Diane and I dreamed up Tend & Transform. It isn’t a retreat about “fixing” yourself. Fixing = yuck. Rather, it’s an invitation to meet yourself more fully. To slow down enough to hear your own thoughts. To reconnect to your body, your desires, your wisdom, your creativity, the parts of you that are likely waiting patiently for your attention. Hello, tender parts!

In recent years, I’ve been in a deep study of the inherited stories, cultural conditioning, and systems that keep women feeling small, stuck, and spinning. At the same time, I’ve been exploring what becomes possible when women gather differently - when we move away from performance, perfectionism, self-sacrifice, and the false story of scarcity that keeps us in competition with each other. I'm excited to invite you into our retreat space where we will welcome the balanced feminine energy of self-trust, embodied knowing, mutual support, and shared power.

Tend & Transform is our offering to create these conditions with and for you.

Through our time, we'll weave together four kinds of work during the retreat:

Knowing Your Tendencies
Before arriving you'll complete DiSC, a behavioral assessment that's been a genuine game-changer for both Diane and me in understanding who we are as communicators. We'll be using it as a tool for awareness and anchoring - but not to shame or even optimize. Diane will also bring in select Dare to Lead™ tools — specifically Living BIG and BRAVING Trust — focused on tapping into your self-sovereignty, self-trust, and boundaries.

Getting Beneath Your Stories
I'll share impactful tools from my studies with Martha Beck, Elise Loehnen's work on the cultural shadow of what it means to be a good woman, and the Conscious Leadership Group. These tools help us get beneath our stories and interrupt the patterns keeping us stuck, spinning, or staying small.

Coming Back Your Body
We’ve invited two gifted guest facilitators who will lead us into the body — Angie Goodstein with restorative yoga and self-energy practice, and Dr. Amy Yillik with a trauma-informed breathwork session. Because lasting transformation doesn't happen through insight alone. It happens when our bodies are invited into the process too.

Expressing & Integrating Your Magic
And because creativity has a unique ability to help us make meaning from our experience and anchor change in lasting ways, joy, movement, and music will be woven throughout our time together. To close our retreat, my dear friend Kate Robinson will guide us through an art therapy session where you will craft a personal talisman to remind you of what you commit to carrying forward.

One practical side note: the content of this retreat is absolutely work-place relevant. If you have access to professional development funds or are a business owner ready to invest in your leadership and hone your vision - this is a smart way to invest!

My hope is that you leave feeling more connected to yourself, more trusting of your own wisdom, and more willing to build a life and career that reflects what matters most to you.

Please join us in July! Register before June 19th to secure your spot - details here: https://bit.ly/tendandtransform

With gratitude,
Whitney Swander

Today’s work needs leaders who are self aware and can lead through uncertainty, risk, and change with grounded confidence. When leaders don’t do their own internal work, they work their issues out on their people and cause harm.

Teams thrive on two essentials: courageous leadership and effective communication. When leaders build trust and teams understand how to connect across different communication styles, collaboration deepens, innovation grows, and accountability sticks.
