April is Finance Awareness Month

adhd & Finances
Due to unique challenges with executive functions, people with ADHD may have some difficulties managing their finances.

Understanding how ADHD traits show up can help build systems that support and reduce the stress and anxiety that often come with money issues.
Impulse Spending
Create “Friction” for spending

Make impulse purchases slightly harder.
  • Remove saved card information from sites

  • Use cash or a separate debit card for discretionary spending

  • Wait 24 hours before buying non-essentials
Even a small pause can interrupt impulsive decisions.
How can you add that extra step?

Difficulty Budgeting
Simplicy
wins

Complicated budgets often fail.
  • Use 2–4 spending categories max

  • Try a weekly spending limit instead of monthly

  • Round numbers (e.g., “$200/week”) instead of detailed breakdowns
The easier it is, the more likely you’ll stick with it.
Keep it Simple

forgetting deadlines
Use external reminders aggressively

Don’t rely on your memory.
  • Calendar alerts for bill checks, subscription reviews, and paydays

  • Set multiple reminders (day before + day of)

  • Use recurring alarms—not one-time notes

ADHD & Memory do not mix

Disorganized & overwhelmed
make your system visible

“Out of sight, out of mind” is real with ADHD.
  • Keep a simple dashboard or app widget on your phone

  • Use sticky notes or reminders in places you’ll actually see

  • Check your balance at the same time daily (pair it with a habit like morning coffee)

  • Check your app subscriptions often(the ADHD brain has a habit of set it and forget it)

Make it obvious

IMAGINE WHAT LESS FINANCIAL STRESS & ANXIETY COULD FEEL LIKE
