"وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ خَلْقُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَاخْتِلَافُ أَلْسِنَتِكُمْ وَأَلْوَانِكُمْ ۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ لِّلْعَالِمِينَ"
And of His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth and the diversity of your languages and your colors. Indeed in that are signs for those of knowledge.

Allah ﷻ points to the breathtaking variety of human beings — different tongues, different complexions, different backgrounds — as a sign (آية) of His greatness and wisdom. And yet, from all this difference, He calls us to something singular: the bond of marriage, through which two people from their own unique worlds find سكينة (tranquility), مودة (love), and رحمة (mercy) together.
This āyah is a reminder that diversity in the ummah is by divine design. An Arab and a Pakistani, a Somali and an American, a Desi family and a convert — these unions are not problems to be solved. They are signs of Allah ﷻ.
But here is the honest question: Are we, as a community, making it easy for people to actually get there? Our communal obligation is practical:
For parents — when your child is ready to marry someone of good deen and character, support them. Do not let cultural pride or ethnic preference become a barrier to what Allah has made permissible.
For all of us — know who in your circles is looking to marry. Make introductions. Be a bridge. Facilitating a marriage is an act of worship.
And for those already married — invest in the quality of your marriage. Communities where homes are visibly filled with مودة and رحمة are communities where young people aspire to marry. That, too, is da'wah.
We live in a time of extraordinary fitnah. The antidote Allah ﷻ placed in this world is family — built on nikah, sustained by mercy. Let us not leave our young people to navigate an ocean of temptation while we argue over cultural formalities. And yet many in our community find the halal difficult and the haram effortless. Zina — in its many modern forms — is more accessible today than at any point in human history. The barriers to haram have never been lower. Meanwhile, the barriers to nikah remain high: inflated mahr expectations, ethnic and cultural gatekeeping that has no basis in the Sunnah, and community indifference toward singles who are ready and willing to marry.
When we obstruct the halal path while the haram path lies wide open, we bear responsibility for what follows.
Make it easy. Help someone get married. Invest in your own home. |
