Dear Sunday Sparker,

April 6th, 2008.

It was my first working day, 18 years ago.

I remember staying in a small office for a while, reading Six Sigma material. This was the material that I later used to complete several projects based on its methodology. I had no desk at the start because we were waiting to move to a larger office. That’s where I met the rest of the quality team. Many of whom became my best friends to this day.

That year was one of the best in my life, with fresh-out-of-university energy, spending my salary on silly outings with my colleagues, and having long lunch breaks because we had a one-hour lunch break. I used to drive my mum’s car before getting my own two years later. That was the point when I started bringing my lunchbox and tracking my expenses.

A friend in our group was the smartest of us when it came to finances. He saved from his salary, the one identical to mine, and bought his own car with a small loan, which he paid off in no time. He married with his own savings without asking his family for help. Yes, we thought he was denying us many outings and meals, but I later realized he was doing the right thing.

I still like that I bought a car two years into my job using a loan that I couldn’t wait to get out of, but I weighed myself financially, although, on the bright side, it made me savvier in tracking my expenses.

So, using a financial lens today, what would I tell my younger self at her first job?

First, I’d definitely say: “I love those heels you are pulling off, they look good!”

Then I will tell her:

  • Start saving from day one, before you make big life commitments like marriage.
  • Take financial courses.
  • Learn about investing early; it’s based on compound interest. Time is on your side.
  • Don't take loans unless super necessary.
  • Don't go crazy with daily spending and save for true leisure like trips and getaways.
  • Track your expenses.

Let’s expand on that last part a little.

In her book, The Prosperous Heart, Julia Cameron calls this counting, and she encourages us to track both the incoming and outgoing money. For example, if you get a cash gift from someone, this needs to be logged. You can log it on paper, but I suggest a notes app like Notion.

Counting makes you highly aware of your finances, grateful for what you have, and more hesitant to waste money on spontaneous purchases.

If you want counting to work, you need to ask yourself: When is a good time in the day to do it? Is it in the last half an hour before leaving your work? Is it every morning when you review the day before?

With AI, tracking expenses has become so easy. You can fill in your expenses in a chat, and AI will update a Google sheet for you and even catch trends for you. Or do as I did:  if you get behind in tracking you can take screenshots of your bank transactions or request a bank statement from your bank app, then upload it to Claude, which can do that for you.

If you miss a week of tracking, start the next week. It would be ideal to go back and log all missed weeks, but doing that will make this habit harder for you. Just start again and keep at it for as long as you can.

I hope you enjoy the podcast episode I recently released about money!

Don't forget to download and print May's calendar, link below, challenge will be added soon to the notion page that you can reach in QR code within the calendar.

P.S. Let's chat if you are considering hiring me to guide you towards your goals and positive habits in 1:1 sessions ( limited spots available for the month of May). Book your free discovery session to discuss your goals and we can start from there.

Snapshot from my week: I hereby announce Magical Saturdays are back. I realized I have so few before the school year ends and I need to work on batching stuff for summer.

Six Sigma

* خذي دورات في الثقافة المالية
* تعلّمي الاستثمار مبكراً، فهو قائم على الفائدة المركبة، والوقت في صالحك
* لا تأخذي قروضاً إلا عند الضرورة القصوى
* لا تبالغي في المصاريف اليومية، وادخري للمتعة الحقيقية مثل السفر والرحلات
* تابعي مصاريفك

The Prosperous Heart،
Notion

Claude

Here is your weekly dose of The Sunday Spark ⚡️a newsletter listing 3 sparks that I thought were worth starting your week with:

1. ✍ Are you a note taker? You need to read the 10 habits of effective notetakers. It is an advanced read but there is a lot to apply on your journey of note taking. I am far from effective because I don’t review my notes regularly, but I have made many strides towards lately by having my notes in one place, which is Notion, rather than Evernote and Google Keep. Still working on this to make reviewing and processing my notes a habit.

2. 🎙️ Have you heard? I am back to podcasting! I released the fourth episode for this season last week about the questions nobody asks you. Listen here and on on YouTube.  Your podcast reviews matter so much! I can't believe we are this close to episode 100.

 3. 💬 Quote of the week:

“The engine that drives self-justification, the energy that produces the need to justify our actions and decisions—especially the wrong ones—is the unpleasant feeling that Festinger called “cognitive dissonance.” Cognitive dissonance is a state of tension that occurs when a person holds two cognitions (ideas, attitudes, beliefs, opinions) that are psychologically inconsistent with each other, such as “Smoking is a dumb thing to do because it could kill me” and “I smoke two packs a day.” Dissonance produces mental discomfort that ranges from minor pangs to deep anguish; people don’t rest easy until they find a way to reduce it.”
