There’s a lot happening behind the scenes and on the plate across Reno-Tahoe, and we’ve pulled together a fresh collection of updates worth your time.

In our feature stories, step into the world of 4-H, where Northern Nevada youth are raising animals, building community, and gaining a deeper understanding of where food begins. Visit an urban garden on East Fourth Street that’s helping individuals rebuild their lives through soil, structure, and shared meals. And follow one couple’s journey into stewardship, sustainability, and the realities of growing truly local food.

Lastly, be sure to check out a selection of this week’s local events.

RAISING FOOD
written by Claire McArthur | photo by Mike Higdon

Before heading to school each morning, Anna and Gracie Shane are out in the brisk morning air filling troughs with food and water for their lambs. At 16 and 14, respectively, the Carson High School sisters have responsibilities that extend well beyond homework and after-school activities. Through 4-H, America’s largest youth-development program, they are raising animals destined for the local food system — and learning invaluable lessons about agriculture, community, and hard work along the way.

WHERE REAL FOOD BEGINS
written by Courtney O'Neill | photo by Mary Claire Bouchér

It only ever feels right to begin at the beginning. Hello, my name is Courtney. I run Prema Farm north of Reno, alongside David, my partner in love, soil, and daily existential crises. We stepped into stewardship of Prema two seasons ago, inheriting it from our friends Zach Cannady and Kasey Crispin.
