Trends in Hiring from 65 Nonprofit Search Consultants |
|
Hello First name / community member, Each spring, I have the opportunity to connect with 65 nonprofit search consultants from around the country. Individuals and companies that focus on serving the nonprofit sector in the US and abroad. It is a great opportunity to talk business, but it is also a great opportunity to talk about the sector and where additional support is needed. One clear theme from this year’s conference: time. Searches, in general, are taking longer as organizations take longer to move forward, candidates take longer to make decisions, and on-boarding takes longer as people negotiate. This is in stark contrast with survey information where candidates are looking for decisions in less than 3 months, balk at more than 3 interviews, and organizations are telling us they need more time and are unsure of whether they can move ahead due to finances, changes in staffing and board leadership, and time to properly onboard someone new. From an industry standpoint, the lack of jobs is bringing more candidates into the nonprofit sector, looking to use “transferable” skills. Leaders from the Alford Group and Campbell and Company are discussing ways to train Senior Development Professionals with corporate and government experience. Nonprofit boards are talking about Business Skills needed to streamline internal operations and respond to AI changing how work is done. All of these are important trends as nonprofits try to maintain their cultures and mission-focused work that make them unique and effective. But how do you maintain culture when leaders from outside the sector haven’t experienced it? Finally, consolidations aren’t just happening in the nonprofit sector. Many search firms are discussing partnerships and mergers with other consulting and search firms. The process is very similar to what we support nonprofits with: what is your value, have you done your own internal due diligence, what are your non-negotiables, and finally, what are you hanging onto that doesn’t serve the organization or your community well moving forward? All in all, a great three days! It is important for all of us at NPN to stay on top of trends and stay connected to our national partners. We’re always happy to share what we’re learning and to build a service that works for you. |
