New here? I’m Carmen McCullough, a curious creator andĀ proven promoterĀ ofĀ artsy projectsĀ that take usĀ off the beaten path. This is my monthly update where I share about my artsy projects hoping you'll be inspired to do the same. Thank you for following along!

Lilacs in Bloom!

My sister sent this photo of the most beautiful lilac and it felt like the perfect reminder to slow down to notice the change of seasons. Here in Minnesota, we went from a cold, gray day into sunshine with 80+ degree weather overnight. Summer is here!

Life can move quickly, so take time to appreciate the moment – in whatever season you are in. 🪻

Night Moves
Image item
I recently completed this new, larger mixed media collage called Night Moves. The piece explores the quiet beauty that reveals itself after dark. It features the Cecropia moth (Hyalophora cecropia) which is one of the largest moths found in Minnesota. I'll post about it on Instagram soon, but you can learn more about it now on my website here.

Rappaccini’s Daughter
When doing research for my Wicked Plant Art collection, I came across a related story by Nathaniel Hawthorne called Rappaccini’s Daughter. It's about a young man who falls in love with the daughter of a sinister scientist who has been raised among her father’s toxic plants. It’s a strange and slightly dark tale that can be tricky to read at times. But the story is relatively short with a worthwhile ending. šŸ’€

Moth or Butterfly?
What is the difference between a moth and a butterfly? I found the best explanation in a fun one-minute video from Ranger Rick Magazine. (And yes, apparently Ranger Rick is still a thing!) The video explains a few easy ways to tell them apart, from antenna shapes to when they’re most active. As someone who frequently features butterflies (and now moths) in my artwork, I loved learning new details about these beautiful little creatures. šŸ¦‹Ā

Breakfast Anyone?
Some people are SO creative!! Check out this wonderfully strange and satisfying stop motion Breakfast Compilation on YouTube by Andrea Love. If you enjoy handmade art, miniatures, or stop-motion animation, this two-minute video is worth a quick watch. šŸ³
