Grackle, I know it’s not true what they say about you… your heart is not black, and neither are your feathers; if we only looked closer, we could see all your layers; how the light catches you: shining violet and emerald hues. Iridescent sheen of satiny blues. You are bold and you are brazen– shameless in your self-expression; watching you is an act of liberation. And when a flock of you come, it’s like an invasion. Some might want you to just be quiet, but I like it when you cause a riot. I embrace your sweet chaos, and get lost inside your raucous chorus; a deafening cacophony that makes me covet your unapologetic honesty, with a pale yellow gaze so intense, you could see right into my soul. You are deep, you are wise, and so out of control. But Grackle, you are not a plague, and you are not a pest– you are simply unrepressed. Grackle, sky-pointing, graceful, arching back, guiding my eyes toward the azure abyss; you are anything but black. __ I was so honored to have the above painting featured in Asheville's magazine, The Laurel ♡ __ My illustrated Poetry Books and Children's Book are available here. |
