In the four years that Alex Geringer-Pate has worked at the Hub Resource Center, the case worker has seen the outreach site transform from a few rented canopies and trailers to the permanent facility located at the end of Struck Avenue.
And she is still in awe each time she sees the new showers and bathrooms, the re-imagined family space and renovated kitchen, along with the Goods for Good clothing shed that are vital to the well-being of the unhoused patrons.
“Sometimes it feels surreal how far we’ve come from where we started,” Geringer-Pate said. “I have to remind myself because when you’re living in it, and you’re seeing it happen little by little, it’s hard to remember where you started. So, I’m in awe of what we’ve been able to do with the space.”
Geringer-Pate, along with community members, HRC partners, City of Orange mayor Dan Slater, State Senator Tom Umberg, The Hub OC CEO Holiday Zimmerman, staff members and volunteers were on hand on April 17 for the ribbon cutting ceremony marking the Grand Reopening of the HRC.
Slater told those gathered that “when we join hands together, we can accomplish so much more than we could do by ourselves.”
The full-service site is a great expression of not only The Hub OC and HRC, but of so many different non-profits, churches and county and city organizations that have come together to help the unhoused in the area.
“This is everybody's space,” said Johnmark Riviera, newly promoted Director of the HRC. He said the Grand Reopening showcased the work that has been done to make sure the patrons are well served.
“We couldn't do this alone," Rivera said.
The HRC serves more than 200 patrons and families daily, helping those in need with housing navigation, medical, dental and vision services, social groups, art therapy, mail services, device charging, and clothing services.
“This space has changed the way that I think about care and love and how I think about how we treat one another and how we could do it together as a team. I think all of it put together makes it impactful.”
