We tried 10 detergents over the last several months.
Our laundry room is a high-traffic command center. We have a baby, a toddler, and two cats, we are a messy crew that constantly tackles everything from juice box spills, beach play, park play, and the heavy-duty diaper blowouts. Since our daily life revolves around swimming and staying active, the washing machine stays in a near-constant state of motion to keep up with the endless rotation of towels and gear.
To manage the demands of our household, we need a detergent that delivers maximum cleaning power without relying on harsh irritants. It is essential to find a formula that is effective on the toughest organic stains while remaining gentle enough for sensitive skin and clear breathing.
I have ranked these options based on my overall experience, factoring in cleanliness, EWG ratings, efficacy, and price.
Since we are such a messy crew, these are my #1. We spill stuff on everything constantly, and this is the ONLY ingredient safe detergent that gets it all out! Absolutely never a double wash needed.
The Experience: These are incredibly powerful. They are the only pods that successfully remove the "stale milk" smell from toddler shirts and keep our white beach towels bright after a long weekend of chlorine and sand. This also saves us from measuring liquid (we're not using more than we need). Ya'll know my family is not measuring in the cap.
Mom Tip: Because these pods are larger, they can sometimes get caught in the rubber seal of my HE machine. I make sure to toss them into the very back of the drum before I pile in the messy clothes.

Price Ranking: #5 (You are paying for convenience, clean, and performance — ~$0.36 to $0.57 per load)
If you want the convenience of Dropps but need something even more stripped back for reactive skin, this is the go-to.
The Experience: These are essentially the same reliable cleaning power as the regular line but with zero dyes or scents. They are excellent for the kids' clothes and my pillowcases. They don't have the Oxi-boost of the 4-in-1, but they are incredibly reliable for a household that can't do fragrances! Again, this also saves us from measuring liquid (we're not using more than we need). Ya'll know my family is not measuring in the cap.

I have tried many different versions of this detergent, and so far, it’s working for us. It’s a liquid, which is perfect for our active lifestyle because I don't have time to wait for things to dissolve when we're rushing.
The Experience: This is a very clean formula that stands up surprisingly well to daily toddler grime. It handles cat dander beautifully and never leaves that "crunchy" feeling on our clothes.
Allergy Watch: Even though it’s scented, the lavender comes from natural plant essences rather than synthetic perfumes, so it hasn't triggered my husband's allergies yet. However, reviews note it can struggle with "stink" embedded in synthetic activewear.
The Buzz: One random thing I noticed is that the lavender scent is so authentic that literal bees were attracted to us while we were outside. If you’re at the park or the beach, just know the bees might think you're a giant flower.

Price Ranking: #2 Affordable (~$0.12 to $0.24 per load)
I don’t use the wash for every load because it’s a splurge, but the scent is a welcome break from the usual "baby and cat" smells.
The Experience: The wash is gentle and smells incredible. It is a plant-based powerhouse that uses Australian essential oils instead of synthetic fragrance, which makes it safe for the cats and the husband. It’s effective, but definitely more of a "treat" for our nicer linens and clothes.

Price Ranking: #6 (You are paying for convenience, clean, and performance — ~$0.39 to $0.49 per load)
I’m giving this its own shout-out because I keep it right by the high chair. It uses lemon myrtle and peppermint to lift berry and juice stains without me needing to scrub for twenty minutes. It is basically magic on toddler food spills. It is effective, natural, and doesn't bother the cats' noses or my husband's allergies.
When I am exhausted after a day of swimming and errands, these are the easiest "brain-off" option to just toss in.
The Experience: These are solid for everyday outfits and my husband's workout gear. They don’t have the same aggressive "kick" as the Oxi version, but they handle basic cat hair and general toddler dirt just fine. It’s a great middle-ground product that saves us from measuring liquid (we're not using more than we need).

This is a refillable system where you mix the soap yourself. While it cleans well, but doesn't blow me away… the process is a total hassle for a family that is always on the go.
The Experience: It is a beast on mud and heavy odors. However, as a busy mom, I hate having to mix the jug. If I run out and forget to prep a new one, I am stuck with a mountain of laundry and no soap. It feels like one more chore I don't need on my list.

Price Ranking: #3 Third Best (~$0.33 to $0.40 per load)
This is what I grab when I have completely failed at ordering my favorites in time.
The Experience: It is a reliable, fragrance-free safety net. It’s great for washing the cats' bedding because it won't irritate them, but it definitely struggles with the really tough toddler stains or the smell of pool water. It’s my backup because I can find it at any grocery store.

Price Ranking: #1 (Tied) Cheapest (~$0.13 to $0.25 per load)
I grab this when I want a plant-based option that is widely available and budget-friendly. It is a staple in most grocery stores and a reliable go-to for many households.
The Experience: This is a very light, easy-to-use liquid detergent. It is dermatologist-tested and hypoallergenic, which is a must for my family’s needs. While it is great for an "everyday" clean, I have found that for our messy crew, it sometimes needs a bit of help with those deep-set workout smells or stubborn cat odors.
EWG Rating:C (While some specific versions score higher, the brand generally lands here due to certain ingredients).
Price Ranking:#1 (Tied) Cheapest (~$0.10 to $0.15 per load)

The Marketing Trap
I fell for the marketing with my first kid, but I have since learned that this is a nightmare for an allergy household.
The Experience: This is the worst one on the list. It is full of synthetic fragrances and optical brighteners. Not only is it unnecessary, but the heavy perfume made my cats sneeze and sent my husband’s allergies into a total tailspin. It is basically just high-scent Tide marketed for babies.

Price Ranking: #3 (Tied) (~$0.16 to $0.31 per load)
I’ve moved this off the main ranking because it isn't really a "detergent" it is an extremely luxury project built for specific needs.
The Experience: This is made from beef fat (tallow) and is the absolute gold standard for families struggling with severe eczema or ultra-sensitive skin. It is incredibly natural and feels like a boutique treatment for your fabric.
The Catch: You have to be careful about waxy buildup in your pipes. I save this exclusively for the baby’s blankets.
