Choosing the right marketing channels comes down to two key elements:
  • Where do you feel most comfortable putting your energy
  • What is going to perform best for your business goals
Finding the right balance between the two can be the hardest part. In the last email I chatted a bit about my current experiments with using social media for my business and since then, the energy I've had for social has decreased little by little.

I found that showing up on socials very quickly started to feel like a drain on my motivation when it came to working on my business. It was taking away the energy that I needed to be putting into my work.

Where I wanted to be spending my energy was in longer blogs and articles. In guides for you guys that you can use in a more practical way. In my Substack posts where I can share a more authentic BTS of what trying to run a slow and intentional business really looks like within the bigger picture of everyday life.

Then comes the next question, is social media currently performing for my business?

The answer is yes. Instagram is currently my number one marketing channel. It gets me in front of the right people and it helps build my newsletter. My boosted Instagram posts are the main source of my online visibility right now.

But, even though I'm seeing results in my business, the work needed to keep it up is not sustainable for me. I can't keep forcing myself to show up in a place that takes more than it gives.

So instead, we adapt.

Instead of cutting social media out completely I'm cutting back. I'm chopping my social posts right down and only posting when I feel I have something specific to say and in the meantime, I'll keep boosting the content I already have to try and reach new audiences.

I'm taking the results of my social media experiment over the last few months and doing what I know works in a low effort way. This then allows me to put more time into doing things I actually want to do to help promote my business. To spend more energy on Substack and enjoy the process of writing and sharing my story, while at the same time marketing my business and connecting with my audience.

Finding the right marketing channels is all about compromise, but not sacrifice.

If you feel like you're being forced to use a channel you don't really want to use, that's not a healthy way for you to do marketing.

To help you do your own deep dive into what marketing channels you might want to use, I've created a workbook that I hope will make things a little easier.

In it you'll find prompts to work through to help bring more awareness to your current marketing, the channels you are using, why you are using them and how you might want to show up in your marketing moving forward.

Don't be afraid to be brutally honest with yourself and go against everything you think you should be doing when it comes to marketing. This is all about you, what you want to be doing and what could work better for you and your business.
