Welcome to the relaunch of
The Sumaira Foundation Quarterly Newsletter

As our community grows, so does our impact—and this newsletter is where we'll share that journey with you. With so much happening across TSF, we've created a dedicated space to keep you connected to the research, programs, events, and milestones shaping the future of our growing rare neuroimmune community. There is so much exciting news to share, and we are thrilled to bring it to you.
The Sumaira Foundation's PCORI-funded (Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute) $9 million clinical trial for AQP4+ NMOSD is moving forward at full speed. The study will compare rituximab against the four FDA-approved therapies – generating the real-world evidence patients and clinicians need to make more informed treatment decisions. With enrollment set to begin later this summer, this landmark trial represents a major step forward in our mission to improve outcomes for the NMOSD community.

On May 29, 2026, history was made in Accra, Ghana, as patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals and advocates gathered at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for the inaugural AFRICTRIMS Patient Day - the first event of its kind in Ghana and the official kickoff to the first-ever AFRICTRIMS weekend. Sub-Saharan Africa finally has its own medical conference dedicated to neuroimmune conditions, including MS, NMOSD, MOGAD and related disorders.

Over the past four years, TSF has hosted close to 30 Patient Days across 7 countries – and 2026 is shaping up to include some of our largest events to date.
Upcoming TSF Patient Days:
TSF has created a toolkit intended for patient advocacy organizations (PAOs) seeking to expand their role in research and build capacity to engage in patient-centered comparative clinical effectiveness research (CER). This toolkit was made possible by a generous engagement award from the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). A Spanish-language version of this toolkit has also been made available.

Our team has expanded and our impact is growing! In 2026, TSF has:
  • welcomed eight new personnel to advance TSF’s mission
  • appointed 3 new clinicians to our Medical Advisory Board (shown below)
  • As of July 2026, we are proud to call 145 patients, caregivers and clinicians from over 40 countries TSF Ambassadors.

The Sumaira Foundation selects Citizen Health as its real-world data partner to accelerate neuroimmune research and provide an AI teammate for every patient. The partnership gives patients a next-generation AI teammate to support their day-to-day care while building regulatory-grade data to accelerate research.

July marks 12 years of The Sumaira Foundation
and celebrates the birthday of the woman whose vision started it all. As we look ahead to the future, we invite you to celebrate this milestone with a gift that helps advance research, expand education, and support individuals and families affected by rare neuroimmune disorders. Thank you for believing in our mission.

Warm regards,
Sumaira
