Hey First name / friend,
This weekend is Pentecost, the Church holiday celebrating what happened in Acts 2: the giving of the Holy Spirit! Like most of our Church holidays, this one mirrors the Jewish festival calendar but with a distinctly Messianic focus. While the Old Testament festival of Pentecost celebrates the giving of the Law, the New Testament fulfillment celebrates the giving of the Spirit.
The prophet Jeremiah anticipated a day when the Law would not just be written on scrolls but on human hearts. Acts 2 fulfilled that anticipation. At His ascension, Jesus told His followers to wait for the Spirit. For the next five weeks, the disciples waited and prayed.
I used to wonder why Jesus didn’t just give the Spirit at His ascension; why wait? The answer lies in Jeremiah’s fulfilled prophecy. Jesus was doing a new thing. The festival previously focused on the Mosaic Law was now focused on a law of love, written on the hearts of those whose allegiance is given to Christ.
At Pentecost, we remember the Spirit. We remember that there is no Christian life, no Christian righteousness, no Christian fruit, no Christian gift without Him!
Speaking of gifts…
I just turned in my manuscript for Every Good Gift, my new Bible study with Lifeway on spiritual gifts! This June, we are recording the video sessions live in Charlevoix, MI, and we’d love for you to join us.
Recording is the third week of June. Specific dates and times are at the registration website. To sign up for a time slot, register at this link:
