Karie told us her show, mounted at Ketchup City Creative, would be titled “We Found Wonderland" and interweave Taylor Swift lyrics while loosely following the narrative of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass as one walked through the gallery space. Her creative ideas revolved around the question of celebrity, how it warps people's sense of reality, and fandom becomes a topsy-turvy "wonderland" that can be both magical and toxic. To quote the essay Karie wrote to accompany the exhibition, and published in editor Emma Riva's digital art scene magazine Petrichor, “If you just rolled your eyes or raised a brow, hear me out.” In the essay's intro, Emma admits to skepticism but goes on to say that being pushed to think differently is part of what Petrichor is all about. I'd venture to add that is also what art is about in many ways. A favorite quote from culinary critic Jeffrey Steingarten's essay collection, The Man Who Ate Everything, is "But the goal of the arts, culinary or otherwise, is not to increase our comfort. That is the goal of an easy chair." |

What we love about working with Karie Luidens: |
|
- Like her name twin, Carrie Smith Libman, she plans ahead. She reached out in July to book her shoot in December, and you know we love that.
- Dog lover! I mean, have you met us? Karie's first email to us included Porter and Jeanie in the salutation, so our hearts grew three sizes. Later, after we had to say goodbye to Porter and before we'd even worked with Karie, we received a hand-drawn portrait of Porter and Jeanie in the mail, accompanied by a very thoughtful note of condolence. (We teared up then and are tearing up now!) It was a total surprise that took our breath away. In the ongoing moment of societal upheaval, division, and social media rage cycle, this incredibly personal and empathetic gift highlighted the importance of forging real connections with people and community.
- She's using her photos! A LOT! We strive to price our services accessibly, but it's still an investment that shouldn't just waste away in the proverbial drawer, your hard drive. So it's been really lovely to see Karie showcasing the documentation on her website and posting batches on social media to promote the work she has available for sale. Can you tell she has a background as a marketing professional? We can.
