“What do you do?”

Have you noticed this always seems to be the first question someone asks when they meet you? I’ve been experimenting with how to answer this question and also trying alternatives. So far, my favorites are:
  • What's brought you joy lately?
  • What are your favorite things to do?
  • What lights you up?

I recently met a mom and her 4-year-old son in a beautiful infinity pool that gave the illusion of melting right into the ocean (talk about feeling light!).

The conversation went something like this…

Her: Tell me a little about what you do…
Me: I help women feel lighter in their lives.
Her: What does that mean!?
Me: It means something different to everyone and in each season, and the first step in feeling lighter is to figure out what that means to you right now.
Her: I wouldn’t even know where to start
Me: You are not alone! I created a feelings wheel to help you think about what that means and have words to describe it. But since I don't have that here…I’m curious! When was the last time you felt like you were doing your favorite things?
Her: Honestly, I have no idea
<4-year old enters the chat>
4 yo: I KNOW what makes me feel LIGHTTTTTTTTT!!!!
Me: Really!? Tell me!
4 yo: Right now! Swimming, playing with my remote-control cars, playing with my sister, going to school, when we have recess at school, learning, flying in airplanes, learning to read, playing basketball, those cookies papa makes, hugs from mommy (gave her a big hug), cuddling our cat, grandma’s house, our house….

His list went on for at least 5 minutes! We just let him talk; he was literally in flow telling us about all of the times he felt like his favorite self 🥰

The mom kept trying to stop him because she thought it was bugging me, but I assured both of them that I loved it and wanted him to keep going. That relaxed her and she finally said, “listening to all of the things that make you feel light makes me realize I really want to figure out what makes me feel light!”

Regardless of whether you are a mother or not, I think this illustrates how as adults we can get out of touch with our favorite things and what it means to feel light. We are so often looking for what makes us happy, but that can be tricky, especially when it feels like the world is dark or heavy. Light can shine through, just like the stars are brightest on the darkest nights.

This weekend, I encourage you to get curious:
  1. What does feeling light means to you? Grab the feeling light wheel here if you want some vocabulary to help
  2. How would your 4-year-old you answer the question what makes you feel light?
  3. Can you add any childhood wonder or your favorite things back into your life?

I’m bringing back a Light Summer for the third year in a row. This summer will be more flexible and sparkly than in the past. I know you probably have a long to-do list, and I don't want to add anything else to it, that's why this is designed to help you turn your to-do list into ta-das and feel more like your favorite self. So if you think you are too busy or don’t have time, I would consider how this can help you get through that busy in a lighter and more joyful way.

I hope you will join in on the fun! You can get started today by downloading the first workbook which includes the Feeling Light Wheel and a simple reflection exercise about your favorite things from past summers.

I'd love to hear from you with an answer to one of those three questions from the beginning of this email:
  • What's brought you joy lately?
  • What are your favorite things to do?
  • What lights you up?
I hope you have a beautiful sparkly weekend, I can't wait to hear from you!

Light doesn’t mean life is easy.

Light means finding hope even when things are hard.
